Sleeping under the tree tops with the squirrels? In the tree house lodge in Schrems, this and much more is possible.
The owner, Franz Steiner, brought the idea for the unusual vacation spot from a vacation in New Zealand. There he happened upon a tree house that impressed him very much. No wonder, then, that this experience came back to him while walking in a forest at home in Schrems. The former quarry site on the outskirts of the city seemed predestined for this project. Together with the tree house architect Andreas Wennig, he set about creating a retreat to relax and unwind. In fact, the two of them have created a really unique vacation opportunity: up to 18 meters high, you leave everyday stress behind and enter a whole new world.
When you enter, you feel immediately safe. The tree houses are not huge, but just big enough that you can live comfortably in them. The generous glass fronts give the feeling of living in the middle of the trees. The natural colors of the lodges also contribute to this. In winter, the fire from the stoves creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. Although outdoors in nature, this has little to do with camping or camping. The equipment in the tree houses is modern, chic and luxurious, but at the same time limited to the essentials. The delicious breakfast with regional ingredients is particularly tasty in the fresh air.
Where could you detach yourself from everyday life more than in a tree house? The canopy of leaves rustles over you, your gaze wanders into the green or over the quarry and the lake. This is what freedom feels like. There is time for discussions, nature observations, fresh air and recharge your batteries. Quiet is guaranteed here.
On the north edge of the quarry, you can see the UnterWasserReich, a nature park center that presents the fascinating world of the Waldviertel ponds and bogs in an exciting thematic way. In the immediate vicinity of the tree house lodge is the Schrems art museum with a beautiful sculpture park.
Clear that saying goodbye to such a beautiful place is sad. But: For the trip home, every guest receives a "poppy tent" from the local baker as a gift - a regional delicacy from the Waldviertel that is a little comforting.

ArchitectureThe modern architecture of these tree houses is unique in Austria. The planning was carried out by the internationally active German architect Andreas Wenning from Bremen, who specializes in tree houses. The construction was carried out by regional companies. In the materials used, mainly regional solid wood, care was taken to ensure that they form a unit with the forest. In order to avoid chemical wood preservatives and time-consuming maintenance work, the outer facades were made from recyclable aluminum plates. In the nature surrounding the tree houses, only the most necessary interventions were undertaken: no surface sealing through asphalting or similar of the access and access routes. Special attention was paid to the unspoiled nature of the surrounding area.
FoodBreakfast is offered to guests. In order to keep the added value in the region, the culinary products come from small businesses in the Schrems area, such as from a butcher's shop that is still sausage. Jam and honey come from a one-person company, cheese comes from a small dairy in the region. Guests also have various options to book dinner. These all come from the region. A typical local delicacy dish is, for example, a baked Waldviertler organic carp in poppy seed breading with Waldviertler potatoes and for dessert poppy seed pasta with plum roaster. The beer on offer is brewed in a private brewery in the village, the wine is bought from small, innovative winemakers. When it comes to breakfast and bookable dinner in the tree house, the wishes of vegetarian and vegan guests as well as gluten intolerance, allergies, etc. are taken into account.
The team has flexible working hours. The operators strive in particular to offer re-entry opportunities and are in close contact with the AMS labor market service in order to enable employees to re-enter work.
EnvironmentSustainability is a real concern for operators. All products offered in the tree houses come from the region and care is taken to shop as free of packaging as possible. For this reason, for example, only reusable honey and jam jars, reusable sausage and cheese boxes, deposit bottles and refillable soap and shampoo dispensers are used in the sanitary area. The little waste is separated and can also be recycled. Furthermore, when building the tree houses, care was taken to ensure that they can be returned to the natural cycle at the end of the life cycle. The tree houses are heated with local wood pellets.
