Hotel Fex

Fex/Sils, Canton of Grisons, Switzerland

In the Hotel Fex, guests enjoy a practically car-free, natural, alpine high valley without power lines and ski lifts. The surrounding mountains with their numerous glaciers and the magnificent view of the end of the valley are all the more perceptible.

The motto of the hotel is "Arrive, switch off and enjoy to the full". It is particularly important to the hosts Luzia Penner and Roland Usai with their friendly and motivated team to offer guests a simple but comfortable stay. It's all about rest and a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The hotel was built in the 1850s, originally standing in the spa complex of St Moritz Bad. The building was dismantled into its individual parts around 1900 and taken to the Fex Valley on horse-drawn carriages to be rebuilt there. The (re)opening of the hotel took place in 1904. After 60 years in the same family, it was taken over by the Bär family in 2010.

The Engadin country house style and the elegant dining room from the Gründerzeit give the guests a special feeling - as if time stood still a hundred years ago. The 16 rooms are built in a classic style with lots of stone pine and offer a breathtaking view of the valley and the surrounding mountains. The simple furnishings do not distract from the essentials. Thirteen rooms have a private bath or shower.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Fex is a country-style mountain hotel with a rich history. The building materials are locally sourced and only local companies have been employed for the various conversions. Old pieces of furniture were extensively renovated.

FoodOnly sustainable regional, seasonal and, where possible, dishes with organically grown ingredients are served in the hotel. The wine list mainly offers specialties from the region and the surrounding area, whenever possible organic or biodynamic wines. The food waste is further processed by a neighboring farm. The kitchen recommends: capuns, pizzoccheri, sliced veal from Fex with rösti or the glacier cheese fondue. The menu includes vegan and vegetarian dishes, and the kitchen caters flexibly to intolerances. In the dining room, guests are not only spoiled with a great view, but also with a lot of love for the culinary art. The dishes reflect the traditional from Graubünden, which is given a modern touch. A rich mountain breakfast is served in the morning. In the afternoon, coffee and tea are served with homemade cakes. Guests can also make themselves comfortable on the spacious terrace. No matter where or what time you dine, the kitchen serves food for the stomach and soul.

The hotel employees all come from the region. You enjoy reduced prices for overnight stays at the Fex and other partner hotels. The hosts are involved in a water treatment project in the Fex Valley. They also offer young authors from the Kein & Aber Verlag the opportunity to work in the hotel where their books are exhibited.

EnvironmentAlternative, ecological cleaning agents are used and strict waste separation is observed. The water comes straight from the mountain behind. The goal is to keep the Fex Valley as pristine and natural as possible. For this reason, the hosts recommend arriving on foot, by horse-drawn carriage or by collective transfer (from the train station in Sils Maria).

Testimonials

Artur K. Vogel, tagesanzeiger.ch, March 2022

Jocelyne Iten, bellevue.nzz.ch, March 2022
