House

Das Hilla

Kassel, Hesse, Germany

The Hilla is a modern forest villa in Kassel that has been opening its doors to guests since summer 2020. Surrounded by forest, orchards and the spacious garden with terraces, guests can relax in the midst of nature and leave everyday life behind. The house dates from 1913 and served as an inn for strollers. Later teachers from a neighboring grammar school lived there. The house has been in private hands since 1980, and in 2017 it was acquired by the current owners, the Janetzky-Aehlen family, on a total of four floors with eleven individually designed bedrooms and seven newly renovated bathrooms.

There is also a light-flooded dining room and a living room with a fireplace for cozy hours. The house is the perfect place for seminars and retreats, where people are supported to develop and find peace. If guests want to work during their stay, there are several individual desks in the writing room. There is also a built-in, spacious kitchen on the lower floor, which is perfect for cooking in large groups.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Hilla is a heritage-protected house with half-timbered parts. During the renovation, natural materials were preferred, such as plaster, oils for the floors and ecological insulation. Old furniture was repainted and modernized, and old colors were deliberately used. Several Kassel companies were commissioned to carry out the renovation.

FoodSlow food is served, in which the food is organically and organically grown. Most of the fruit and herbs currently come from the garden. A “carefree package” is offered, consisting of a delicious breakfast, a balanced meal at lunchtime and a delicious soup with bread in the evening. In addition, the fridge is filled with fresh fruit and various snacks. An own arable land is to follow in order to be able to grow vegetables in the future. The food waste is used as much as possible, for example vegetable scraps are boiled down as a broth. There are vegetarian dishes and food intolerances are also taken care of.

EnvironmentMost of the heating is done with firewood, the cleaning agents are biodegradable, just like soaps and shampoos. Since the house is in the middle of the forest, great importance is attached to living in harmony with nature: Stray animals are allowed to eat windfalls, plants are a source of nutrition for insects and trees are only treated by experts.
