Waaster Jügem 8, or WJ8 for short, offers a modern interpretation of the classic Frisian house: While its exterior presents a traditional appearance with thatched roofs and brickwork, the interior surprises with spacious, light-filled rooms and high-quality furnishings. Upon arrival, one immediately senses the openness of the house – no small, space-optimized rooms, but rather open areas for relaxation, togetherness, and well-being.
Built between 2021 and 2023, the house was designed by the local architectural firm Grotheer and lovingly realized by the owners. As longtime fans of Föhr, they incorporated their experiences and favorite ideas into every detail. The idea behind WJ8 was to create a place for family and friends – a temporary home that combines spaciousness, comfort, and a truly special atmosphere. Here, you'll find space to leave everyday life behind and fully enjoy the unique ambiance of the island.
The living room of the house spans 40 square meters, while the dining and kitchen area boasts double-height ceilings, complemented by a carefully chosen color scheme with strategically placed accents. Throughout the house, there are secluded spots for quiet moments, making it ideal for both social gatherings and peaceful relaxation.
The village of Utersum itself is relaxed, without hustle and bustle or celebrity appeal. The nearby beach invites you to take long walks, and on clear days you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Just 400 meters away is the beach where kitesurfing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) tours – for example, to the neighboring island of Amrum – are possible. The island also offers ideal conditions for extended cycling tours.

Local tradespeople were deliberately chosen for the construction – short distances, good cooperation, and high-quality workmanship were paramount. Historic bricks were reused for the exterior facade – stones salvaged from demolished buildings, offering a beautiful, natural look while also being sustainable.
The house is heated by district heating, which is generated from waste heat. A ventilation system ensures a constant supply of fresh air without significant heat loss. High-quality insulation and triple-glazed windows further contribute to minimizing energy consumption.
There is a sauna on the ground floor. It opens directly onto the garden – deliberately not in the basement to increase comfort. The spacious garden invites you to relax on the loungers and enjoy the fresh North Sea air.
