Treehotel

Harads, Norrbotten County, Sweden

Who hasn't dreamed of a tree house as a child? But when you get a little old, you also appreciate comfort. Both are possible at the Treehotel in Harads: relax in a beautiful ambience and be one with nature.

Imagine the setting of the film “Avatar”, just a bit more Scandinavian: pristine nature, fresh air and large pine trees. In some of the proud trees hang - sometimes more, sometimes less hidden - tree houses. The term “tree house” does not adequately describe the accommodations in Harads. Each of the rooms, which are about four to six meters high, is a small design pearl inside and out. One floats like a UFO between the trees, the next looks like an oversized bird's nest. Each of the rooms has a spectacular view of the nearby Lule River. The interior is simple but extremely chic.

Hotel manager Britta loves this area so much that she quit her job in health care for it in 2004. Since then she has been running her own guest house, Britta's, where the tree dwellers can also have all their meals. The cozy and lovingly designed guesthouse in the style of the 30s offers a nice contrast to the very modern tree houses. If you want more privacy, you can also have your food delivered directly to the tree house.

Whether in summer or winter, you can do anything in the area: hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or rafting. There is also an outdoor spa and sauna. Most of the guests enjoy the tranquility and the untouched nature, in which one can go for long walks, reflect on one's thoughts and leave the stress of everyday life behind.

Sustainable

ArchitectureEach of the tree houses was individually designed by a well-known architect. During the construction, care was taken to keep the interference with nature as minimal as possible and to use only natural materials, mainly wood, without toxic chemicals. To impregnate the wood, it was heated to over 200 degrees, which stimulated it to mobilize its own defenses against destruction. The interior furnishings and lighting are specially tailored to the respective theme of the tree house. The houses were attached to living trees without destroying the tree or even cutting a tree for it. All tree houses are installed in pine trees at heights between four and six meters. The rooms are accessible either via a ramp or a sturdy staircase. One of the rooms has an electric, retractable stepladder.

FoodThe Treehotel serves a rich buffet with typical dishes and fish and game specialties from the region every day. The fresh ingredients come from local suppliers and for the most part from organic farming. Main supplier Svantes Vilt & Bär runs its business only about one kilometer from the Treehotel.

EnvironmentThe Treehotel wants to offer a unique experience of nature and so it is no wonder that the hosts consider sustainability and environmental protection as the foundation of their hotel operations. Britta and Kent hope that their guests will appreciate their efforts to keep the hotel's ecological footprint as small as possible, even if this has kept the accommodations a bit simpler. All tree houses are well insulated and heated by underfloor heating. Particularly energy-efficient LED systems are used for the lighting. The electricity is obtained from renewable hydropower. Daily hotel operations are also designed in such a way that they only have a minimal impact on nature. Only environmentally friendly products are used for cleaning. The tree houses are not connected to any sewer system. However, every tree house has a modern, electric-powered toilet that burns all excrement at 600 ° C. The process is completely odorless. The “Mirrorcube” apartment has another special feature: an electric freezer toilet is used there. The bathrooms have water reservoirs that are sufficient to wash your hands and face and brush your teeth. All wastewater is collected in a container that is emptied daily. Showers are in a separate building.

Well-BeingThe operators can of course organize a Swedish massage, but actually everything in Sweden revolves around the sauna. In the unique tree house sauna, up to eight guests can sweat at the same time. Towels, drinks, snacks, soap, and shampoo are included with each session - which can last up to two hours. The two shower blocks are well equipped, in both there is another sauna and a plunge pool. There is also a hot open-air whirlpool.

The treehouse hotel has become its own genre in recent years, but the Treehotel is an unusually sophisticated expression of every child’s fantasy.

"Just like going back into mom’s house and enjoying a home-cooked meal after playing in a treehouse all day, this is the childhood fantasy that we all dream of."
