Soledad Big Waves

Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), Canary Islands, Spain

Waking up in the morning at Soledad Big Waves, you'll see the first surfers in the Atlantic, the sleepy village of San Felipe, and green volcanic peaks – a start to the day that immediately evokes holiday feelings.

The hostel is run by passionate surfers Carlos and Elba. Originally a simple family home in the fishing village of San Felipe, it was lovingly renovated in 2021. Guests start the day with yoga or surfing, cook together in the evening, and become part of an international family. The atmosphere is open, relaxed, and characterized by genuine hospitality.

Sustainability is a priority here – from upcycled furniture to herbs in the garden. Plastic is avoided, and everyone is committed to helping with beach cleanups. The design also tells a story – each room is individually designed with great attention to detail. In addition to the two common rooms with ten beds, there is a triple room and several double rooms. The suites have small kitchens and therefore more privacy. Guests can enjoy their vacation together in the large communal kitchen and on the roof terrace.

The house is just steps from the ocean. In addition to surfing, guests can enjoy various outdoor activities such as canyoning, hiking, or climbing in the volcanic landscape. It's the perfect place for relaxation or an active holiday with sea views. Here in the north of Gran Canaria, nature, adventure, and a sense of home come together.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe architecture combines traditional Canarian construction with modern, sustainable elements. During the renovation, existing structures were preserved and natural, local materials were used. Many pieces of furniture are recycled, homemade, or upcycled; the outdoor area features low-maintenance plants and requires no artificial irrigation. Local artisans were used in the renovation. Many materials, such as wood, stone, and ceramics, come directly from the island, reducing the environmental impact of transport.

FoodThe food is seasonal and local, mostly organic. Many ingredients come from regional farmers and markets. The garden grows some herbs and vegetables. Food waste is collected separately and either composted or distributed to local farmers for animal feed.

Local staff and volunteers, who provide accommodation, meals, and surf and yoga sessions, enjoy fair working conditions and a family-friendly atmosphere. Social projects, particularly in the areas of environmental protection and education, are also supported. The accommodation also offers internships for local youth.

EnvironmentAt Soledad Big Wave, waste is separated, plastic is avoided, and recycled. Upcycled furniture and recycled materials are found throughout the house. Cleaning is done with biodegradable cleaning products. Water and electricity are used.

Well-BeingThere are yoga sessions and massages offered by local therapists to help you regenerate after an active day.
