Refugium zu Sanct Kassian

Algund, South Tyrol, Italy

The Sanct Kassian refuge is nestled in the gentle landscape of the South Tyrolean Etsch Valley, with sweeping views over vineyards, Tyrol Castle and the surrounding mountains.

Those arriving here are immediately immersed in a special sense of tranquility – far from everyday life, yet so close to Merano. The heart of the property is the spacious, lovingly landscaped garden: 1,200 square meters of greenery, interspersed with secluded spots, and crowned by a natural swimming pond that uses no chemicals.

The historic building, the former early mass house from 1854, bears its history visibly within itself. Thick walls that once housed clergymen now convey a sense of permanence and timeless elegance. Originally conceived as a private retreat for the host family, three stylish apartments now open up to guests seeking a special place to settle in.

Each apartment has its own unique character: Piano I impresses with clean lines, original larch wood floors, and a modern Bulthaup kitchen – a postmodern blend of old and new. Piano II exudes rustic Alpine style with a pine-wood parlor, apple-tree kitchen, and the charm of a Tyrolean home. Piano III is urban and flooded with light, featuring fine walnut wood and an open feel. All share a keen eye for detail, a sense of atmosphere, and the feeling of not just living here, but truly being at home.

Particularly convenient: Merano is just a few minutes away, so nature, culture, and enjoyment are within easy reach. Those seeking barrier-free travel will find step-free access and generous space at Piano I – a detail that makes this retreat even more special.

Sustainable

Architecture

The old Frühmesserhaus (early knife house) tells a story of stability and tranquility through its thick walls. During the renovation, the original ambiance was consciously preserved and enhanced with furnishings that combine tradition and contemporary spirit. Authentic materials such as larch wood floors, an applewood kitchen, and the cozy pine furniture in the living room in Piano II bring regional craftsmanship to life. Timeless design meets honest materials here – realized with great attention to detail and in close collaboration with local artisans.

Food

A bread delivery service from the local bakery brings fresh pastries directly to your door, and the small 24-hour in-house shop stocks selected regional products for spontaneous purchases.

The employees come from the region and bring with them not only their experience but also a piece of South Tyrolean lifestyle.

Environment

The natural pool is completely chemical-free and cleans itself with plants – bathing feels like immersing yourself in a piece of nature. The South Tyrol Guest Pass also allows guests to travel sustainably, as it grants free use of public transport and selected cable cars. For everyday use in the refuge, a fine natural cosmetic soap from Team Dr Joseph is also available – made in South Tyrol, regionally, high-quality, and with a pleasant fragrance.

Well-Being

Massages, sauna sessions, and treatments can be arranged at partner establishments, as can yoga classes. The retreat itself features an auditorium with a kitchen, ideal for retreats or small events, and a historic wine cellar invites you to enjoy atmospheric wine tastings.
