The Quinta do Catalão farm in the Portuguese Algarve is the perfect place to get away from it all. Away from mass tourism, it invites you to enjoy nature and relax.
The typically Portuguese farm stood empty for a few years until Karolina and Max discovered it with their three children. Together with Pedro, their Portuguese partner, they bought the farm in 2013 and gradually had it converted and lovingly restored. The farm now offers various small, cozy accommodations such as cabins or even a tent where guests can sleep.
A day at Quinta do Catalão begins with a hearty, warm breakfast, which includes good coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. Afterwards, the highlight for children is feeding the animals that live on the farm (dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs and goats). The afternoons invite you to read a book in comfortable hammocks or go to one of the beaches of the Algarve.
In the evening you can grill together or bake with the pizza oven. There is the possibility to see a film via a projector and thus let the day end in a relaxed manner. In addition, one can enjoy a magnificent view of the sunset from the yard.

ArchitectureEach accommodation at Quinta do Catalão is unique. Most of the facility is self-built using recycled materials, the walls are painted with eco-friendly paint. The style can be attributed to the Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, which emphasizes the beauty of the imperfect and the incomplete. If something breaks, the first attempt is always to repair it. There is even a spot in the yard where various old things are collected for later repair or remodeling.
FoodThe fruit and vegetables that grow on the farm are always harvested just before they are served. Thanks to the chickens, there are fresh eggs every morning. Care is taken to ensure that almost everything grown is eaten. The animals eat the leftovers or they are composted. This ensures that no food is thrown away. The offer consists of seasonal and local dishes. The ingredients that do not come from their own garden are bought from neighboring farmers or at the weekly market. There are numerous vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options for guests. In addition to a hearty breakfast, there is the option of shopping in the afternoon from a food truck in the courtyard. This offers warm, small dishes as well as homemade cakes and ice cream.
Employees can stay overnight on the farm for free. Students who combine working on the farm with a subsequent holiday in the Algarve are also happy to be employed. Quinta do Catalão is part of the Erasmus internship program.
EnvironmentThe water is heated by solar cells. The water already used is used again to water the plants. The system is mostly equipped with solar light. Only environmentally friendly products are used to clean the rooms. There are two environmentally friendly washing machines in the yard that use little water and electricity. And thanks to the many rays of sunshine, everything can dry directly in the sun after washing.
Well-BeingThe top priority is that the guests are doing well. Karolina and Max are happy to give tips on where to eat in the area and on numerous excursions. There is a yoga class once a week (more on request).
