Oakstone Hills is nestled in the gentle hills of central Portugal in the Dão region, a place where pristine nature, vastness and tranquility set the pace.
On approximately one hectare of terraced land, a panoramic view opens up over pristine valleys characterized by cork oaks, pines, olive trees, eucalyptus, and bamboo. In the distance, the Serra da Estrela mountain range is visible, while right next to the house, a private fruit and vegetable garden with seasonal produce invites guests to linger and harvest.
This distinctive natural stone building dates back to the late 19th century and once served as the school and kindergarten for the Folhadal district. Today, it has been carefully transformed into a boutique eco-guesthouse that blends history, sustainability, and modern simplicity. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and linen define the rooms, creating an atmosphere of peace, warmth, and comfort. Each room is individually designed and offers a direct connection to the landscape – be it a view of the expansive valleys, the gardens, or the surrounding woodlands.
Oakstone Hills is the brainchild of Kilian and Henriette, a young German couple who emigrated to Portugal in 2025 to create a place that combines movement, regeneration, and nature. Their concept unites yoga, functional training, mindful relaxation, and farm-to-table cuisine inspired directly by their garden.

The architecture is typical of central Portugal and is characterized by a natural stone house built from massive granite blocks, which give the building its original character. During the 2018/2019 renovation, the existing structure was deliberately preserved and complemented with natural materials such as wood and regionally typical elements. Durable, natural materials are also used in the interior design and furnishings. The exterior largely utilizes existing elements. Construction and renovation were carried out predominantly with local suppliers and regional materials – from the wooden deck of the yoga shala to locally sourced furniture and stonework, most of which was done on-site.
Seasonal, local, and carefully selected ingredients form one of the cornerstones of Oakstone Hills' concept. The kitchen consistently follows the farm-to-table philosophy: whenever possible, produce comes directly from the garden, with fruits, vegetables, and herbs available in season. This is supplemented by products from local markets and small producers in the region, preferably organic or sustainably grown and with short supply chains. Planning is based on demand, overproduction is avoided, and a mindful approach to food is encouraged, such as taking only what is actually consumed. Organic waste is composted and returned to the garden's natural cycle. The cuisine features homemade products such as seasonal jams from the orchard, spreads like hummus, ketchup, pickles, dried fruits, house-made liqueurs, and olives and olive oil produced on-site. These are complemented by a variety of vegetable dishes, fruit salads, and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies made directly from the garden.
We consciously work with people from the region, including the gardener, local craftspeople, and service providers. Many food products are sourced from regional markets and producers in the surrounding area to support short supply chains and local value creation.
The guesthouse is certified as a "Turismo Rural" accommodation and meets high standards for sustainable, rural tourism. At its core is a conscious, resource-conserving approach to nature and the surrounding environment. The lovingly restored building was designed using natural, local materials and with careful consideration for the existing architecture. Water and energy are also used sparingly, including through a private rainwater harvesting system and the use of groundwater for irrigation. The saltwater pool operates without chlorine and is naturally heated by the sun through a black inner lining. The gardener works mindfully with the soil, seasonality, and natural cycles. This understanding is openly shared with guests, encouraging them to adopt a conscious approach to resources, for example, by harvesting from the garden or through daily interactions.
Movement is a central pillar of Oakstone Hills. The focus is on yoga and functional fitness sessions, held in a semi-open yoga shala overlooking the valley, as well as in the urban outdoor fitness area. An eco-friendly saltwater pool provides a refreshing alternative. Oakstone Hills also serves as a venue for external hosts and retreats – from yoga, meditation, and breathwork to modern fitness concepts and holistic programs. Several times a year, the resort hosts its own yoga and fitness retreats, and regular movement classes are available for guests. Restorative elements such as ice swimming and outdoor sessions support the balance of body and mind. The surrounding area perfectly complements this concept: collaborations with surf schools on the Atlantic coast, river and natural swimming areas, hiking and cycling trails along the Dão and Mondego rivers, and excursions to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park or the Bussaco Forest.
