Nordic Refuge

Fröskog, Västra Götaland, Sweden

The Nordic Refuge is located in a former school building from the early 20th century, which was carefully renovated in 2021.

Located in a small Swedish village, the bed and breakfast offers a tranquil setting with direct access to nature. The four spacious rooms, ranging from 30 to 55 square meters in size, are furnished with classic Scandinavian design furniture. Each room is decorated in a color scheme inspired by a Swedish national park, combining clean lines with a touch of color and warmth.

The north- and east-facing rooms overlook the garden, which was deliberately planted with fruit trees and wildflowers to promote biodiversity. To the west and south, the view extends across the hillside down to the lake, with the south-facing room also featuring a balcony.

The Nordic Refuge is run by François and Anne, originally from Belgium, who wanted to realize their own project in Sweden. They discovered the old schoolhouse by chance and created a place that combines elegance and comfort with nature. Their focus is not on growth, but on becoming more sustainable and more integrated into the local community.

There are numerous options near the Nordic Refuge, especially for outdoor enthusiasts: hiking maps and detailed tour suggestions for the nearby nature reserves are available. Cyclists will also find a selection of routes with GPX data and maps. Just a few hundred meters from the B&B is a lake—one of countless others in the region. Wild swimming in the untouched nature is simply a must here.

Sustainable

ArchitectureGreat emphasis was placed on sustainability during the renovation of the building. Recycled materials were used wherever possible, but otherwise, local building materials such as wood and flooring were primarily used. The furnishings consist almost exclusively of vintage Scandinavian furniture (and secondhand everyday items – from hairdryers to kettles.)

FoodBreakfast consists almost exclusively of regional products—from bread and cheese to eggs and homemade jam. Most of the ingredients are organic, and whenever possible, fruit from the garden is also included. Only vegetarian dishes are served, with vegan or allergy-friendly options available upon request. Particular care is taken to avoid food waste: thanks to well-thought-out processes, hardly anything goes to waste, and leftovers are composted. A highlight of the breakfast is the slow-cooked apples from the garden with cinnamon, refined with fresh local blueberries.

EnvironmentThe house is heated with wood pellets from local sawmill waste, and only certified organic products are used for cleaning.
