Nascar Hotel

Santa Maria Navarrese, Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe because the coast has never been developed. Smart Sardinians prevented this early on. And so the largest Italian Mediterranean island attracts nature and beach lovers in all seasons.

Santa Maria Navarrese is located in the Ogliastra region with its sometimes rugged rocks and mysterious bays. The Nascar Hotel is an institution in the region. The elegant two-story house in traditional stone construction has twelve rooms. They all feature some wooden and stone elements typical of the island.

Sardinian artists worked on the design of the house with great attention to detail and materials from nature such as stone, juniper wood, terracotta, ceramics, iron and linen. The colors of the sea and the scents of the earth permeate the rooms. The style is warm, rustic and elegant at the same time. The building, which is over two hundred years old, was once used as a barn and wine cellar before it was completely renovated and converted into a hotel by the Porcu family in the early 1990s.

The Sardinian tradition of the simple life of goatherds still plays an important role in the island's culture today and can also be found on the plates. The hotel has an excellent restaurant with a cozy inner courtyard. Sardinian specialties such as Malloreddus (Sardinian gnocchi), traditional shepherd's bread (Pane Carasau) and of course olives and cheese are served here. But there is also seafood and lots of good olive oil, for which healthy Mediterranean cuisine is so well known.

Speaking of the sea - it's just a few meters to the water, where locals and tourists alike enjoy the island's beautiful beaches.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house was built over 200 years ago from local granite stone and required a structurally-preserving renovation using local craftsmen who know the material and the tradition.

All employees are from the region and appreciate the good working conditions and the family atmosphere. Many of the employees have been with the hotel since it opened in 2008.

EnvironmentAll possible measures are taken from alternative energy production, up- & recycling, consistent waste separation, alternative cleaning products and the use of local products. They have eliminated all unnecessary disposable items from the hotel, such as slippers, and this was very well received by the guests. They are also members of the MEDSEA Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by a group of researchers to work towards the protection and sustainable management of the marine and coastal resources of Sardinia and the entire Mediterranean.
