Masseria di Matraia

Matraia, Tuscany, Italy

The Masseria di Matraia, a lovingly renovated 200-year-old farmhouse, is located on the upper edge of the picturesque village of Matraia in Tuscany.

From here you have a breathtaking view of the wide plain of Capannori, which in the evenings is lit up by the gentle twinkling of countless lights. On the right side of the hill you can see the small church of Matraia, and in the front garden there is a venerable olive tree.

The host couple Christian and Katja von Sydow live and work in Munich, but have been regularly spending their holidays in the Lucca area for many years. Their passion for architecture, art, literature and Italy led them to acquire the Masseria di Matraia in 2022. The house was lovingly furnished according to their personal taste and enriched with selected works of art that reflect their connection to aesthetics and craftsmanship. It was intended to be a place where family and friends can come together and spend unforgettable time. Since it is not used by the hosts all year round, a rental concept was developed to share the joy of this special place with guests and keep the house alive.

The house embodies the motto of "luxury of simplicity" - a simple but tasteful elegance. Terracotta floors, wooden beamed ceilings and hand-crafted ironwork give the rooms a warm atmosphere. The furnishings combine high-quality design classics such as the Eames Lounge Chair with antiques and works of art by artist friends. In addition to the beauty of the house, the surrounding area offers everything your heart desires: three restaurants within walking distance, an alimentari (small shop), and the nature of the rolling hills of Lucca.

ArchitectureThe architecture of the house impresses with its authentic details: the terracotta floors, the beautiful ceilings with old wooden beams and bricks as well as the massive stone walls outside create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The old wooden barn doors and the traditional ventilation bricks in the barns also give the building a unique charm. For renovations and repairs, only local craftsmen were used - many of them come from the village and have already accompanied the conversion by the previous owners. Their excellent work and the close connection to the house ensure that every change fits harmoniously and respectfully with the history of the house. Particularly valuable pieces of furniture come from an inn in Lower Saxony that was about to be demolished - including a table, dishes and a linen cupboard. Second-hand furniture and exhibits from designer shops were also added to give the house a personal and stylish touch.

FoodIn the garden of the Masseria di Matraia, guests can help themselves to a variety of delicious fruits and herbs: rosemary, laurel, sage, thyme and many other aromatic plants grow here, as well as figs, cherries, apricots, grapes and almonds. 60 olive trees are carefully tended and the harvest is collected by hand. The organic olive oil produced from them is a real highlight. Guests are invited to discover the regional specialties, including the award-winning sausages from the local Alimentari, which have been produced in the traditional way since 1871. Also recommended are the wines from the neighboring wineries that thrive on the hills surrounding the village. At each reception, each guest receives a bottle of local wine from the Colle Verde winery (Terre di Matraia, organically grown).

EnvironmentThe municipality of Capannori, known as a pioneer in waste separation in Italy, sets standards in environmental protection. Here you only pay for residual waste, while the separated waste is collected daily - some other types of waste several times a week. The waste is divided into organic, plastic/aluminum, glass, paper, diapers/hygiene products and residual waste. The water is heated exclusively by solar panels, and a well on the property supplies the garden and washing machine with free well water. The heating can optionally be operated entirely with the fireplace, which heats the heating water itself and at the same time creates a cozy atmosphere. Guests can choose between gas heating and the more environmentally friendly fireplace heating. Only organic soaps are used in the soap dispensers in the bathrooms and organic washing-up liquid in the kitchen in order to avoid small packaged products. Before arrival, guests receive an electronic guest folder, which is also available in printed form on site. This explains the waste separation system with collection times and the use of the fireplace heating. In particular, waste separation is an issue that guests are made aware of so that they can all contribute to protecting the environment.
