Why travel far away when the good things are so close? Take Lower Bavaria, for example! The Rott River, with its many tributaries and streams, has created a diverse landscape, with gentle hills and steep valleys. Many bird species still feel at home here that aren't so easily found elsewhere, and the forests are richly populated with wildlife.
And here, the Espenberger family has been running a constantly evolving organic farm for decades. While for many years mother cows and calves dominated the farm landscape, today there are a few "pension cows" that can be seen in the pastures.
Another focal point of agriculture is the diverse orchards, where numerous varieties such as quince, apple, plum, and even medlar can be found.
Since 2012, there have been several guest cottages in the garden, each featuring a wood-burning stove and a homely mix of old and modern interiors.
Two of the cottages are built on stilts on the hillside. One of them offers unobstructed views toward the Bavarian Forest. From the second, guests can gaze up into the crowns of ancient fruit trees.
The “house on wheels” is located in the orchard and from the “Quittenschupfa” you can enjoy the view of numerous quince trees and, with a bit of luck, even a breathtaking Alpine panorama.

ArchitectureTo build a house, you first need a place to stand. If the building site is too narrow, a hill, you can either intervene massively in the landscape and level it, or get creative and place the house on stilts on the hill. Supported by thick tree trunks, they will last a long time because they were felled during the right phase of the moon. A third cottage stands on wheels in the garden. These cozy accommodations were designed, built, and furnished largely independently by the Espenbergers according to strict ecological principles. All materials are locally sourced and biodegradable.
FoodFor over 30 years, the Espenberger family has been producing certified organic food on their farm. Guests who wish to book a breakfast basket will receive a personalized selection of seasonal produce, some of which is home-grown and produced, of the same high quality. Those who visit at the right time can enjoy the opportunity to witness apple juice pressing or to conjure up small and large delicacies with their hosts in the homemade oven in the garden.
The Espenberger family offers children from nearby schools the opportunity to participate in juice pressing or invites them to the farm for felting or candle-making. Chestnut trees were also planted in collaboration with a school.
EnvironmentBirgit and Alfons Espenberger have been practicing sustainability for much longer than the term has been modern. Their farm has been certified organic since 1983. They produce many things themselves, from elderberry syrup to apple juice, handicrafts and candles, bread and cakes. Solar energy is collected on the roof, and water comes from their own spring. Waste is, of course, collected separately. Appropriate containers are provided in the cottages.
