Les Rochers

Cerisy la Fôret, Normandy, France

Fields and old fruit trees as far as the eye can see. And right in the middle of this hedgerow landscape, which is typical for the area, is the 16th-century manor. A manor house formerly inhabited by the nobility.

Susanna and Konstantin Falk fell in love with the building at first sight. They were particularly impressed by the potential to expand the former farm buildings. They have taken the time to do this for more than 10 years. With the participation of many helpers, some of whom have lived in Les Rochers for months. The monumental four-sided courtyard now stands there in new splendor, fairly faithfully restored from the outside. The interiors are decorated with lovingly selected vintage objects and works of art of all kinds. And through the windows you can see fruit trees or deer grazing in the twilight.

The whole area around the farm has become a small bird sanctuary, so many different species can be observed here. And the stars can be seen particularly well here. Sure, no light pollution far and wide. And a few kilometers away there are various beaches. Also larger and smaller architecturally interesting cities to visit and directly from the house there are beautiful paths for walking, hiking and cycling.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe old buildings have been renovated and modernized in collaboration with local craftsmen and companies using local materials such as wood, stone and lime, creating an interesting contrast between old and new. Almost all of the furnishings are reused or made on the farm itself.

FoodThe kitchen of the property is open from midday for guests to cook for themselves. Here is a basket with fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs from the surrounding gardens for the guests. The products are mostly not certified "organic" but in fact they are. You can also shop in the next village and from regional producers in the area. The hosts are happy to pass on addresses. A lovingly prepared breakfast is served each morning and Norman Seafood is available for guests to pre-order on Friday evenings.

Some of those who were involved in the conversion could live in Les Rochers with their families for months free of charge. Susanna and Konstantin are involved in several local initiatives and aid projects.

EnvironmentThe house has been renovated mainly with natural materials. It is heated with our own wood and energy-saving devices. Electricity runs through the lines exclusively from sustainable energy generation. Of course, rubbish is separated and recycled, all green waste is composted or fed to ducks and horses. All cleaning agents and care products used are biodegradable. Les Rochers lands are managed as organic grasslands and have been partially converted into a bird sanctuary. (So bring your telescope and field guide!) The owners of the farm also support the LPO (ligue de la protection des oiseaux) financially.
