Les Cabanes d'Ostende is a wonderful little retreat that combines nature, comfort, and proximity to the sea in a special way.
Opening your eyes in the morning, you gaze out through the large windows at soft light over the swimming pond, dewy meadows, or the tall trees rustling in the wind. Sometimes the golden sun breaks through the branches, bathing the entire cabin in warm light—a tranquil start to the day.
The idea behind the cabins is simple: to unwind in a quiet, green setting without having to miss out on city life. By bike, you can reach the beach or the center of Ostend in just a few minutes. In between, there's time to collect eggs from the chickens, pick herbs from the garden, or relax on the small wellness island with a sauna and natural swimming pond.
The project was born in 2022 out of a family's desire to create a place where sustainability and hospitality go hand in hand. Today, the cabins proudly bear the Green Key label and combine eco-friendly concepts with a cheerful, colorful style: plenty of wood and fresh color accents that convey lightness and joy.
What many guests appreciate is the contrast: birdsong on the terrace in the morning, perhaps a coffee in town or a trip to the seaside in the afternoon. This blend of nature and urban life is what makes Les Cabanes d'Ostende so special – a place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and become more aware of the little things.

Sustainability was a central consideration during planning and construction: Natural woods and durable materials were used, complemented by furniture of timeless design and carefully selected second-life finds. The outdoor areas also reflect this approach: A natural swimming pond replaces the traditional pool concept, and a permaculture garden and native plants promote biodiversity. Even the wellness island with a sauna and bar relies on simple, repurposed structures and energy-efficient systems. The cabins were crafted in the Netherlands from sustainable wood and furnished with a blend of Dutch and Belgian design. This not only reduced transport costs but also supported local craftsmanship.
Regional products are used, such as meat from Dierendonck, vegetables from surrounding farmers, and other regional specialties. Guests can also collect fresh herbs, seasonal vegetables, and eggs directly from the on-site garden and from the farm's own chickens. Meals are prepared on a small, self-directed scale to minimize food waste; leftovers are separated, and organic waste is often given directly to the chickens or composted. A highlight for guests is the Dierendonck barbecue package: premium meat that can be prepared on your private terrace under the trees, accompanied by a glass of wine – simple, yet particularly fitting for a get-together in nature.
Employees can use the wellness island, bicycles, and sauna free of charge, and regularly enjoy an overnight stay in one of the cabins themselves. Training programs in sustainability, guest relations, and general hospitality skills are also offered, ensuring that working here is both a matter of development and enjoyment. Commitment to the local community is also part of the concept: social and cultural initiatives in Ostend are supported, including projects that bring people together around nature and well-being. Collaborations with organizations that promote inclusion and provide recreational opportunities for disadvantaged groups also give these people the chance to experience a stay in the cabins.
This commitment has been recognized by the international Green Key label, which stands for particularly sustainable tourism. Sustainability is evident in many details: The cabins are designed as tiny houses, equipped with good insulation and efficient heating, keeping energy consumption low; they are powered exclusively by green energy. Rainwater is collected and reused, and cleaning is done with eco-certified products.
Guests can enjoy a private sauna on a small island in the natural swimming pond. Yoga sessions and Intermittent Living Escapes—a retreat program that combines nature-based relaxation with scientifically sound lifestyle interventions—round out the offerings. The focus is on simple, natural ways to rejuvenate: fresh air, exercise, good food, and plenty of rest.
Moments from the North Sea, hidden in a green pocket of urban Ostend, Les Cabanes d’Ostende is a quietly radical rethinking of the Belgian seaside break. The concept is simple: a series of timber cabins designed to blend into their natural surroundings, offering guests a slowed-down, design-forward alternative to coastal tourism.
