The factory building in Schönbach, built around 1890, has an eventful history. Since 2022 there have been nineteen holiday apartments and some larger rooms for seminars, workshops and celebrations in the “Kulturfabrik”. The Starke family has lovingly renovated the building and created a place that combines village charm with cool industrial architecture. In addition, a place for active inclusion was created, where all people with their different talents have fulfilling work and a secure environment. A real heart project - in every respect.
There are holiday apartments of different sizes, from a creative studio for two people to a factory loft for six people. Modern elements are deliberately in contrast to the old building structure. And at the same time, comfort should not be neglected during the conversion. The spacious apartments all have a well-equipped kitchen and some even have a terrace. The apartments are modernly furnished and the colors grey, white and blue dominate the interior. Children not only gave their names to the holiday apartments, but also helped design them. They chose the colors for "their" holiday apartment and some colorful portraits of the children, which a regional artist made of them, are decoratively distributed in the rooms and corridors.
The view from the windows of the village of Schönbach and the surrounding meadow orchards, fields and forests ensures immediate relaxation. In addition to the individual studios for creative work, the central meeting place is the "Max" restaurant. A bright blue building in the middle of the courtyard, reminiscent of the town's traditional blueprint craft. The building is named after Max - the son of the owner, who is actually something of the originator of this beautiful idea and location that is worth supporting.

ArchitectureDuring the conversion from 2021, as much as possible should be preserved in order to build sustainably and leave the old industrial charm. Old floors, historic lamps and factory windows are combined with furniture made from recycled materials. As a special feature, even chairs from the 1972 Olympic Games were reused here. During the conversion, construction companies from the region worked together and care was taken to reuse existing materials, such as old bricks and tiles.
FoodGuests of the Kulturfabrik Schönbach have the opportunity to order a regional factory breakfast at Haus MAX. The various products for this come from partners such as the Heidorn bakery, the Lawalde village cheese dairy or the Pietzschke farm from the surrounding villages. On request, vegetarian or vegan breakfast can be served.
MaxDorf gGmbH was founded in December 2020 and has since been developed in various directions. The Kulturfabrik Schönbach offers jobs in a wide range of areas. DORFWALDBACH is the name of the major project by the Starke family, which promotes inclusion with three different locations and wants to let the charm of the village flourish with innovative ideas.
EnvironmentThe Kulturfabrik is holistically designed for sustainability. All residential units have separate rubbish bins, which are picked up separately by the waste disposal company. The entire building is heated with a wood pellet heater. Soaps and other hygiene products are refilled in dispensers. Parts of the meadows are to be planted with insect-friendly plants in the future, so that there will soon be homemade honey.
