K1 Baumhaushotel

Odenthal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

The K1 Treehouse Hotel offers a unique nature experience that combines luxurious comfort with spectacular views.

Nestled in the treetops or on the edge of the forest, each tree house offers fascinating views of fields with grazing sheep, cows and horses or into the depths of the forest through panoramic, round or roof windows. The experience is given a special touch by furnishings that correspond to the comfort of a hotel room - just five meters above the ground.

The hotel is run by Stefan and Leon Vornholt together with Isabella Neven-Dumont. The family has owned the K1 forest, which also houses a climbing forest, for decades. The idea of the tree houses came about when employees occasionally spent the night on the platforms in the treetops. In collaboration with architects and sustainability experts from TU Dortmund, including Simon Loske and Ingo Münch, a concept for minimally invasive tree houses was developed that does not disturb the sensitive ecosystem.

The four treehouses - Treeangle, Cube, Loop and Oak - are uniquely designed using natural materials that reflect the surroundings. Cube is the largest treehouse and is designed in the Bauhaus style, Loop and Cube are shadier and located directly in the forest, while Treeangle and Oak are on the edge of the forest and offer plenty of light. The interior design is luxurious and adapts to the character of each treehouse. The proximity to Cologne, several dams for swimming and numerous hiking trails in the nature reserve round off the experience at the K1 treehouse hotel.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe "Loop" tree house floats impressively on steel cables between five mighty copper beeches and only touches the ground via a supply shaft. Four additional beeches ensure stability, even in storms. The cables are anchored in the trunks in a minimally invasive manner and sealed with resin to protect the trees from germs. Tree engineer Martin Zeller has been monitoring the health of the over 100-year-old beeches for twelve years, which are supported by an underground irrigation system in dry periods. In order to protect the sensitive nature, the team does not use excavators; the building materials were carried into the forest by hand and assembled with chain hoists. Solid wooden walls that store heat, nature-friendly lighting and, where possible, green roofs ensure sustainable comfort. Even the insulation was partially created with sheep's wool. All windows, metalwork, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work come from regional suppliers, and the paths were laid out with stones from a quarry 20 kilometers away.

FoodCurrently, the K1 Treehouse Hotel only serves breakfast, which consists mainly of organic and regional ingredients. The fruit salad, for example, is mainly made with local fruit, and the coffee comes from the Heilandt company, which relies on 100% direct trade and guarantees the highest quality. The hotel already uses its own bees to produce honey, but their production is currently not sufficient to meet demand.

All employees of the K1 treehouse hotel come from the region and, during the construction of the treehouse, received additional training in the areas of chainsaws, climbing and treehouse construction, which was financed by the company. They are regularly able to use the climbing forest and the accommodation. For years, the hosts have also been socially involved and support children's and youth projects in the area, often through free entry or overnight stays in the treehouse. Most recently, 200 tickets for the climbing forest were donated for World Youth Day.

EnvironmentThe tree houses in the K1 forest are heated sustainably: pellets supply the heating and hot water, while the electricity comes from the company's own solar system. To save energy, a modern KMX system is used that optimizes consumption online. The paths in the forest are designed to protect the forest floor and the roots of the trees. Garbage is consistently reduced - for example by avoiding plastic bottles. To promote biodiversity, 2,000 new hedge plants were planted in 2024 alone, and 10 to 50 trees are added every year. The pastures of the sheep, horses and cattle are not fertilized, and streams are removed from grazing to protect the ecosystem.
