Jaima & Casa Barronia

Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Jaima & Casa Barronia are two very special accommodations on Lanzarote.

Casa Barronia is a 33 m² round eco-house built using environmentally friendly methods. This Art Nouveau-style house was constructed by the owners themselves using high-quality, carefully selected materials, adhering to the "Kilometer Zero" principle (maximum use of local materials, eliminating environmental impact from transportation). In addition to the exceptionally balanced indoor climate thanks to the eco-friendly clay construction, there is an open gas fireplace for cozy warmth on cool winter evenings. The 20 m² covered terrace provides a sheltered outdoor living area. Here, you can watch the sunrise over the sea and enjoy breakfast in a sunny and wind-protected atmosphere.

The Jaima Teseguite Bedouin tent offers 35 square meters of authentic oriental tent atmosphere with the luxury of a modern apartment. The Jaima is an insulated Bedouin tent with a comfortable indoor climate. A gas heater is provided for cool winter evenings. It comprises a living room with a sofa, satellite TV, a sound system, and Wi-Fi; a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator and gas stove; a modern shower room; and a bedroom with a double bed (160 x 200 cm). When the sun rises over the sea, it shines right into bed during certain months. Breakfast on the sunny, sheltered terrace is a wonderful way to start the day.

The accommodations are very private and located in a quiet setting on an aloe farm, surrounded by fields outside the small village of Teseguite, on the edge of a bird sanctuary.

Nature is your neighbor here. Nature lovers will find plenty to discover. Various country lanes, plains, and ravines, along with birds, rabbits, lizards, plants, and more, invite you to explore on foot. The nearest beach is a 10-minute drive away, while Costa Teguise and Famara are 15 minutes away. The nearest supermarket is 3 km away. The capital, Arrecife, is 10 km away, a 15-minute drive. Towels and bed linens are changed weekly. We also offer laundry services. The owners live on the aloe farm and are available for their guests. Pets are not allowed, and smokers are kindly requested to smoke on the terrace out of consideration for subsequent guests. Renting a car is recommended to explore the island's beauty. Two bus lines connect Teseguite with Arrecife, Teguise, and the north of the island. The bus stop is 300 meters away.

Incidentally, we also featured this accommodation in our "Five Places to Spend the Winter" article .

Sustainable

Architecture

The construction of the tent began as an experiment. The 40 square meter roof area is the largest continuous piece of fabric Melchior Zeidler has ever worked with. The resulting roof shape is intended to echo the form of the volcanic mountains in the background. The tent has been completed since spring 2017. The wood for the floor and terrace comes from a sustainable Galician reforestation project. With the help of an old carpenter from the village, the woodwork was carried out, and all surfaces were protected against weathering and insect damage using the natural technique of charring. The partition wall inside the tent is plastered with natural clay. Casa Barronia was built by the owners themselves using high-quality and carefully selected materials, adhering to the "Kilometer Zero" principle (maximum use of local materials, no environmental impact from transportation).

Environment

Both accommodations are inherently among the most sustainable forms of housing, as they are practically completely demountable. The tent stands on a floor made of recycled pallets, which do not seal the ground, and is constructed from natural materials as much as possible. Guests are expected to treat nature with respect, and we always appreciate their participation in waste separation and composting. Energy is generated 100% self-sufficiently from sunlight. The hosts provide their guests with drinking water filtered with activated carbon and EM (Effective Microorganisms) to avoid the purchase of PET bottles.
