Haidl-Madl

Bischofsreut, Bavaria, Germany

Arriving at Haidl-Madl's, you find yourself surrounded by nature. The house boasts a beautifully landscaped garden of approximately 3,000 square meters, featuring mature trees, fruit bushes, and shrubs. The view extends to the Dreisesselberg mountain and across to the Bohemian Forest on the Czech side. A moorland meadow, where even rare orchids grow, lies directly adjacent to the property. The wild forests of the Šumava National Park begin just 150 meters away.

The house itself has been in the family for over 300 years. Host Ingrid explains that her ancestors built it in 1705. Her parents ran a farm here until the 1990s – farm holidays had been offered since 1970. When farming was finally discontinued and Ingrid returned after years in the city, she wanted to preserve and develop the property. In addition to living space for her own family, the holiday apartments were expanded, modernized, and furnished with a keen eye for design.

No two apartments are alike. Ingrid carefully selects furniture, colors, and details, combining select design classics with a calm, understated style. Many of the pieces come from her second business, the interior design division of Haidl-Madl. Some can be tried out during a stay and purchased if desired. Good lighting, high-quality mattresses, and fine linens are as much a part of the concept as the old, thick walls that give the house its unique character. Ingrid often hears that many guests sleep particularly well here.

Besides the apartments, there is also a blue room with a wood-burning stove, which serves as a communal lounge. A small shop offers products from select manufacturers, and there is also a large collection of good books. Many things invite you to take your time without needing a planned itinerary.

Those who do want to venture out have plenty of options: hikes up the Dreisesselberg mountain, the Bavarian Forest National Park with its animal enclosure, the natural bathing pond in Haidmühle, or the Finsterau Open-Air Museum are all nearby. Passau and the Czech town of Český Krumlov are also ideal for day trips. Back at the house, the garden and the view of the mountains await.

Sustainable

Architecture

During the renovation, Ingrid followed a simple principle: preserve as much as possible and only change where necessary. The historic house was therefore carefully renovated, so that much of its original substance and character was retained. Natural, locally sourced materials such as lime plaster and native woods were used. The four-centimeter-thick, untreated solid wood planks made of Bavarian Forest spruce and fir are a prime example. Natural solutions such as lime and gemstone paints were also chosen for the colors. For the renovation work, Ingrid collaborated exclusively with local craftspeople. They are familiar with the regional materials and know how to process them using traditional methods. The furnishings combine pieces from renowned designers, including items from Denmark, with works from smaller, family-run workshops. In this way, the house blends its long history with contemporary living without losing its original character.

Food

Ingrid embraces the Slow Food philosophy and values high-quality ingredients and a mindful approach to food. She shops for breakfast at the organic store, while fruits, herbs, and vegetables come from her own garden. Anything that can't be used fresh is preserved or made into apple juice. The homemade jams and compotes are later used in the cakes she bakes for her guests, for which Ingrid uses organic spelt flour. Breakfast varies slightly each day and is served with select ingredients on beautiful dishes. Freshly baked cakes also await guests in the blue room. Those who prefer to make their own coffee can use the espresso machine.

Ingrid is assisted by a cleaner from the village just one kilometer away, who prefers to travel to her by bicycle. She also relies on local cooperation for her laundry: the ironing is done by the Wolfsteiner Workshops in Freyung, a recognized workshop for people with disabilities.

Environment

What grows in the garden is kept on-site as much as possible and reused. Plant waste is added to several compost heaps, and the cut grass and hay are taken to a neighboring farm. There is a separate water source for irrigating the garden and flowers. Ingrid also relies on high-quality, eco-friendly cleaning products, and recycling is a matter of course in her daily routine. In addition to the 3,000-square-meter natural garden, the property includes another four hectares of agricultural land. To ensure that as many plant and animal species as possible find habitat there, it is mowed only once a year using a particularly gentle method. A specially protected moorland meadow is also located on the property. Beyond her own land, Ingrid is committed to preserving the cultural landscape and actively supports the regional project "Bischofsreuter Waldhufen" (Bischofsreut Forest Pastures).
