Gut Hornegg

Preding, Styria, Austria

Gut Hornegg includes a castle, a bathing lake, the old gardener's house, the Meyerhof, venerable park trees, vineyards and 5 holiday apartments full of character. The estate looks back on 800 years of history and you can feel it. Walls up to 1.5 meters thick, beautiful old wooden windows and magnificent stone and wooden floors characterize the character of the castle. Airy glass structures, modern parquet floors, shade trees, a huge playground and cozy terraces give the old gardener's house its special charm.

The holiday apartments have been sensitively renovated and show the patina of the historical materials. The estate's own farm shop and the design shop in the castle complement Hornegg's offering.

Hornegg Castle was founded around 1200 by the Hornecker knights. Around 1550, the old knights' castle was converted into a Renaissance castle by their descendants, the Saurauers. For over 150 years, Hornegg served as the summer residence of the monks of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery in Stainz. Fish farming also dates back to this period. The last great innovator of Hornegg was Daniel von Lapp, the railway pioneer from Germany. He built Hornegg into a well-known model estate and gave the castle its current appearance.

The castle was first mentioned in documents around 1230. In 2017, the renovation of the first holiday apartment in the castle began under the direction of the host Marie-Theres Holler, who is a carpenter, farmer and architect. There are now three apartments that she rents out together with her family. Marie-Theres' brother is happy to show guests around the organic fish farm, and if time permits, it is sometimes possible to book a meal with her sister.

The siblings' vision is to be able to preserve the house and the magnificent estate and to breathe new life into the rooms. They want to show how little it is possible to create a great atmosphere. Marie-Theres wants to make her birthplace appealing to guests and show how carefully she runs the Hornegg estate.

Sustainable

ArchitectureWe always tried to use only natural materials such as bricks, clay and lime. We deliberately did not use any plastic, which was not always easy, but thanks to a lot of research we found alternatives. For example, the windows are not painted but have only been treated with linseed oil. The renovation was carried out in collaboration with local craftsmen.

Only employees from the region are employed at Gut Hornegg. The hosts eat together with their employees every day and they also go to gymnastics together once a week - both at the company&

EnvironmentThe house is heated using its own wood, in the form of a so-called component storage heater, which is particularly energy-efficient. All of the furniture is made from upcycling projects. Ecological cleaning agents made from linseed oil and soft soap are used. Thanks to the property&

Well-BeingOn the roof of the former estate garden, which is also located on the property, there is a small "wellness house" with a sauna. Guests can look forward to swimming in the property&

Testimonials
