The Glamping Suite La Jaima is a large, comfortably furnished Bedouin tent on the 20-hectare grounds of Agriturismo Refugio Marnes in Spain.
With its 10 x 5 meter footprint and tall, airy design, the interior feels surprisingly spacious and remains pleasantly cool even in summer. Large openings – a window and a wide-opening door – connect directly to the surrounding nature. The view is exclusively of greenery, accompanied by birdsong, the occasional bray of a donkey, and the tranquil atmosphere of the entire property.
La Jaima is completely self-contained, with its own bathroom and kitchen, so you have complete privacy. Evenings spent outside on the sun loungers are especially lovely when the sky is clear and you can peacefully observe the stars.
Refugio Marnes has existed for over 25 years and was founded and gradually developed by two friends, Richard Steenblik and Willem Pieffers. The tent concept actually existed before "glamping" was even a term and has been adapted repeatedly over the years, most recently undergoing a complete redesign.
The focus is on a simple, nature-oriented lifestyle, sustainability, and a relaxed form of hospitality. Inside, La Jaima combines Moroccan influences with a modern, tranquil style: natural materials, subtle colors, and ample space create a relaxed atmosphere amidst nature.

Tents of this type, known in Spain as "jaimas" have a direct connection to the country's Moorish past. They were once common here and can still be regularly seen at medieval markets and festivals, where they are often used as teahouses or pavilions. Furthermore, jaimas are particularly well-suited to warmer climates: their height traps heat at the top, while the lower living area remains comfortable – the five-meter-high ridge is therefore quite functional. This particular tent was custom-made by a tent maker from Casablanca and handcrafted specifically for this accommodation.
Breakfast is prepared using as many fresh and regional products as possible. The focus is on simple, high-quality ingredients sourced locally.
A full-time, in-house trained gardener maintains the grounds year-round. He regularly participates in professional development and, together with his team, pursues a nature-integrated approach, which he implements with evident enthusiasm. All services, materials, and purchases are sourced locally whenever possible, primarily from Benissa and the Jalón Valley. The estate's social commitment is also rooted in the region: Support is provided to the local swimming club and a foundation that purchases natural areas for long-term protection and preservation. This foundation, FUNDEM, also advises on the development of the park and the agricultural land surrounding the main estate and operates the impressive visitor garden, Jardín de l'Albarda.
Almost all of the energy – around 99% – comes from solar power. Wastewater is recycled on the grounds, and insecticides and herbicides are largely avoided. Instead, the focus is on sustainable materials, consistent recycling of all waste, and composting of organic matter. Another priority is to make the several-hectare property more ecologically diverse by specifically promoting native plants and trees. In addition, existing trees and plants are being labeled so that guests can learn more about the local flora and the biodiversity of the grounds.
