Gasthof Kohlern

Bozen, South Tyrol, Italy

The Gasthof Kohlern is located in the middle of idyllic nature above Bolzano at over 1100 meters. This gem, consisting of a few houses and a small chapel, blends picturesquely into the surroundings. The historic cable car takes you to this dream vacation with panoramic views - floating in the air, so to speak.

Today, Cristina and Josef Schrott continue to run the family business, which has been a dream destination for South Tyrolean holidaymakers since the 1960s. The inn, built in 1870 in Alpine Art Nouveau style, used to be a retreat for the finer Bolzano society. Today, guests from all over the world who love nature, are looking for relaxation, want to enjoy good food or want a romantic break meet here.

The manor house was renovated in keeping with the style - natural materials such as wood and stone played an important role. The style is a successful mix of rustic and modern elements - such as the nostalgic wooden veranda and the cool infinity pool. There are 20 rooms and suites in total. The newer so-called refuges have their own terrace and offer a great view of the South Tyrolean mountains or the surrounding nature.

On the restaurant terrace you can enjoy a good glass of wine at sunset, while the lamps in the valley and the stars in the sky begin to shine. Wine tastings with the winemakers of the month are held regularly. The regional delicacies served in the restaurant are made with great appreciation for the seasonal products. The delicious bread comes from the first organic bakery in South Tyrol.

Sustainability is lived here and considered in all areas, without guests having to forego comfort. This way, the balance between past and future is achieved for everyone - guests and hosts.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe original manor house was built in 1870 from local building materials and carefully renovated according to the latest findings in building biology. Natural building materials such as wood, clay and lime with certified origins were used, which ensure healthy sleep.

FoodLocal and regional products from organic and ecological farming are served. The Profanter bread comes from the organic bakery, which was the first in South Tyrol in 1982. Food waste is reduced together with the guests and if there is anything left over, the organic waste from Bolzano is sent to a biogas plant in Lana. The collected cooking oil is processed into biodiesel. The restaurant is known for regional delicacies such as veal head, pear flour ravioli with goat ricotta, sour soup or stockfish rösti.

Almost all employees live in the Bolzano region and the surrounding area. There are further education courses, training programs and special working conditions that allow for more leisure time. There is also compensation for cable car rides and, if urgently needed, free accommodation.

EnvironmentThe energy used is renewable energy, certified with a guarantee of origin (34 hydroelectric power plants in South Tyrol that produce green electricity without emissions). Waste separation, recycling, gentle cleaning products and economical water consumption are a matter of course here. As are regionality and seasonality. The South Tyrol sustainability label (Terra Footprint powered by EarthCheck) is based on the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and recognizes tourism players who have made it their mission to preserve traditions and make their contribution to the sustainable living space of South Tyrol with concrete measures.

Well-BeingThe Finnish sauna smells wonderful and the herbal aroma in the steam bath is soothing. The extensive range of massages and treatments as well as the infinity pool and whirlpool ensure hours of relaxation. In winter, the pool is heated from December 22nd to January 6th.

Testimonials

Bereits die fünfminütige Anfahrt mit der Kohlerer-Bahn, der ältesten Personenseilbahn der Welt, ist spektakulär. Schlern, Rittner Horn, Etschtal, Bozen...
