Finca de Arrieta

Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Seeing the sun rise over the seemingly unreal landscape of Lanzarote is one of the many unforgettable moments that can be experienced in the Finca de Arrieta. The concept behind the former Finca de Arrieta farm is exceptional in many ways.

The ecologically operated facility consists of 15 individually and lovingly designed holiday accommodations, which are spread over a spacious park of 30,000 square meters. The original Mongolian yurts on the grounds of the finca catch the eye from afar, and at the same time give the complex a very special character. In the exotic garden with palm trees, mango and peach trees and various communal areas, such as the pool and chill-out area with sun beds, you can enjoy the mild climate of the island all year round.

Guests can choose between small stone houses in the Canarian style, a converted water tower, converted farm buildings such as the hay barn and the farmhouse, or one of the Mongolian yurts. No matter how you choose, life in the Arrieta finca takes place outdoors, surrounded by unspoilt nature on the north coast of Lanzarote. The flowing transition between inside and outside and the imaginative design with Moroccan and Indonesian elements characterize the houses of the Finca die Arrieta.

The solar-heated pool provides refreshment. The physical well-being is also taken care of: the breakfast basket delivered daily is filled with fresh, locally produced organic delicacies. The relaxed and familiar atmosphere, as well as the quiet location near the beach ensure that holidaymakers feel comfortable here from day one. Younger visitors are also very welcome and can live out all over the area: jump trampolines, collect eggs from the in-house chickens, make friends with the Molly donkey or let off steam on the imaginatively designed adventure playground.

Sustainable

ArchitectureWhen the dilapidated Canarian finca was converted into a modern eco-resort, the original structure was largely preserved and, wherever possible, the lava stone found on Lanzarote was used. In addition, recycled wood was used whenever possible in the construction of the finca, as wood generally has to be imported due to the low forest occurrence in Lanzarote. For example, old telegraph poles were used. Some of the furniture comes from Morocco and Bali, but most of the furnishings have been made in local handicrafts. Elements originally present on the site have been integrated into the structure of the facility. The solar-heated pool was originally a water tank, and the former barn, water tower and farm building were converted into modern holiday homes. When expanding the plant further, the operators made sure to keep negative environmental influences as low as possible. A creative solution to this are the original Mongolian yurts, which also give the complex an “exotic” character.

FoodThe Finca de Arrieta is self-catering, there is no restaurant on the premises. However, there is the possibility to have a breakfast basket with homemade, fresh, locally produced organic delicacies delivered by a local supplier. There is also a local delivery service that offers organic food with vegetarian options, or you can have an “Eco-Box” delivered directly to your home. These ingredients also come from local suppliers and farmers and are, where possible, organically grown. In addition, there is a small “Honesty Shop” on the grounds of the finca, where you can buy specialties from the region.

The local commitment of the Finca de Arrieta team is evident in the intensive cooperation with small, local providers and thus the economic support of the entire region. The Braddock family has a friendly and long-standing relationship with the islanders and many regional providers. The Finca de Arrieta also supports local sports clubs and is, for example, one of the main sponsors of the Costa Norte football club. The latter also organizes competitions in sport fishing and in the "national sport" of the Canaries, surfing. In 2012 the Finca de Arrieta was also a sponsor of the surfing and skating competition on the island.

EnvironmentThe resort is completely independent of the "official" power grid on the island. Thanks to solar systems, wind turbines and the latest technology in the field of renewable energy, the ideal weather conditions on the island are used efficiently while protecting the climate. A generator is available for emergencies, which is operated with bio-fuel. The pool is filled with water from its own source and heated with solar energy. Recycled water from the system is used to water the plants. In some apartments, guests can use a hybrid vehicle for excursions on the island free of charge. All employees of the plant are trained in environmentally friendly behavior. For example, emphasis is placed on waste separation and only biodegradable cleaning agents are used. When purchasing new devices, attention is paid to their energy efficiency, and water consumption is kept as low as possible by means of technical measures. All of these measures are implemented without giving guests the feeling that they have to do without something. For days with little sunlight, for example, the energy is stored in batteries to ensure a continuous power supply. The only thing that is dispensed with in the accommodation equipment is appliances with high energy consumption such as dishwashers, televisions, irons or electric boilers for water.
