Eressian Hotel & Hammam Spa

Lesbos, Aegean Sea, Greece

The building of the Eressian Hotel & Hammam Spa was originally a family house from the 1850s and was converted into a boutique hotel in the 2020s, preserving the historical fabric of the building. Guests can climb the 170 year old staircase while enjoying modern luxury. A perfect balance between preserving history and respecting the present.

The owner's great-great-grandfather Alex Michalas built the house for his family. The owner's grandmother was born in the house in the 1910s but was forced to sell it in the 1950s to enable her to move to Athens. In the 2010s, the owner bought the house back to the family and reopened it as a small boutique hotel in 2020.

The guests are offered a luxurious accommodation steeped in history, from which the untouched, original and still undeveloped side of the island of Lesbos can be discovered. The host would like to protect the unspoiled part of the island, but at the same time offer guests high-quality accommodation in this region. So that local people and businesses can benefit in a responsible way. The hotel is open all year round as the island, with its changing vegetation, is a delightful destination all year round.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe main objective in designing the hotel rooms was to highlight the history of the building with its main features: the wooden floors, the imposing staircase and the internal and external masonry. Part of the interior masonry was exposed and preserved by removing the plaster, so that the original structural elements of the building are clearly recognizable: clay, hay, stone and wood. All original elements were preserved as best they could during the renovation. The building materials, including the stone and wood, were procured on site. The atmosphere is determined by the high ceilings, the large windows and the imposing staircase. While the building is large and flooded with light, some rooms appear rather small and cozy. Each room in the hotel has its own unique design, inspired by elements of the original interior. For example, in the Sappho Suite, the master suite on the first floor, the dominant feature is the unique ceiling rose with golden acorn details - a personal homage to the first owner, an ancestor of the current owner.

FoodAll breakfast ingredients are seasonal, local and 100% organic. The breakfast menu is themed 100% Lesbos. The local chef recommends the "Eressian Eggs Benedict";: poached organic eggs from Eressos with toasted brioche slices, kavourmas from Lemnos pork and hollandaise sauce with sheep butter from Eresos. In addition, vegan and vegetarian dishes are offered. The kitchen is happy to take food intolerances into account. The host tries to participate in the program of the Slow Food movement in Greece. Food waste is not thrown away but, depending on its condition, either given free of charge to the families of the employees: inside or to a local animal shelter.

80% of the employees come from the island. You and your families can use the hotel and spa facilities free of charge. Employees who come from outside receive free accommodation. In addition, all employees regularly receive free training. The host supports a number of charities on the island of Lesbos, as well as the local community, through regular donations to the local school.

EnvironmentEnergy is generated with very ef fi cient heat pumps. There is currently no permit for solar collectors as the building is a listed building. All windows and doors are energy-ef fi cient and triple-glazed. We try to recycle everything as possible. The cleaning is done with environmentally friendly cleaning agents. The guests are informed about careful water consumption. In addition, a 5,000 square meter plot of land near the hotel was purchased to create a garden and a farm that guests can visit. The host supports various environmental projects financially.

Well-BeingA variety of massage and hammam treatments are available to guests. There are various yoga courses as well as therapeutic yoga that takes place in the warm hammam area. An indoor and outdoor pool skilfully round off the well-being offer. The area offers various opportunities for outdoor activities, such as cycling and hiking tours, surfing and swimming.
