The Berghof Fennematt is located at an altitude of 900 meters on a south-facing slope in the middle of the Parc de Ballon d'Alsace nature park. Up here, guests can really switch off in a new, ecologically-built building. The Fennematt is located in a side valley with little radio interference and is therefore free of WiFi, but is rich in wild nature and time to relax.
Host Eide Dücker is the initiator of the project, which, in addition to the Berghof's guest operations, also supports a gardening business and the community. A few years ago, he consciously decided to live a more slow-paced life, left Berlin and moved to Alsace. On his spiritual path, he gained new strength and thought about what he really needed to be happy. Fennematt found him in 2010 when he drove to the Vosges to look at a community project. He describes it as love at first sight and a deep feeling of connection. In 2016, he was able to purchase the property outright. One year later, construction could begin: On the 60-hectare site, around 3 hectares were terraced and landscaped according to the principles of permaculture. The new building was then constructed: a Feng Shui-optimized solid wood construction with healthy building materials.
Six of the holiday apartments are designed as two-storey studios (45m2) with a kitchen, bathroom and an open dining and living area and offer a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. In addition to the studios, there is a large holiday apartment on the ground floor with 6 bedrooms (30m2) with a shower room, which are furnished as single, double or triple rooms. Guests prepare their meals in the shared kitchen, with an adjoining separate dining room and a spacious, light-flooded living room/group room, which is also very suitable for self-catering seminar groups.
The special thing about the Fennematt is that it is a low-radio frequency accommodation. The new building has a shielded electrical installation, so there is no WiFi, neither for the hosts nor for the guests. Eide decided to take this step because he was becoming increasingly aware of how sensitive he was to radio waves and that he wanted to live in a place where he could feel completely at home and not be exposed to radiation. This is very well received by the guests, because many long for this kind of radio silence, at least during a vacation.
The Fennematt combines communal living and business with organic farming and its own gardens - and art and culture are also part of it. Eide is supported by a small community of spiritual and electrosensitive people.
By the way, we also featured this accommodation in Five Places in Radio Silence .
ArchitectureThe entire new building project was supervised by an experienced Feng Shui architect, from the basic concept to the details of the furnishings. The building is clear, flooded with light and comfortable. As far as possible, materials were selected with sustainability in mind. The collaboration took place with regional companies, for example the "NUR-HOLZ solid wood house" was completely manufactured, delivered and built by the Rombach company from the Black Forest.
FoodGuests prepare their own meals in the modern kitchenettes in each studio. The Berghof Fennematt has a vegetarian/vegan focus. Occasional exceptions are permitted. Guests are asked to take this into account when planning their meals. Groups can pre-order organic products from wholesalers. The hosts manage 60 hectares of land, of which around 25 hectares are mixed forest, 16 hectares are natural regeneration and 15 hectares are mountain meadows. Three hectares are cultivated according to the permaculture principle. The terraces with vegetables, herbs, fruit and berries offer many delicacies depending on the season, which guests can also purchase.
Since the beginning of the project and in agriculture, the hosts have worked closely with employees from the valley. The relationship is very friendly. In addition, the hosts are members of the "Common Good Economy" and regularly donate to various projects, especially emergency education, through their own foundation.
EnvironmentThe hosts attach great importance to sustainability, which can be seen across the board: electricity is obtained from a green energy provider. Heating is provided by solar thermal energy and a pellet heating system as well as a wood-fired oven. There is also a kitchen compost bin. The waste water is cleaned by microorganisms in a plant-based sewage treatment plant. For this reason, guests are asked to use purely biodegradable personal care products and cleaning agents. The Fennematt is a non-smoking house. Smoking is also prohibited in the immediate vicinity of the house and on all terraces and balconies.
Well-BeingThe surrounding area offers numerous tours for hiking or mountain biking. Numerous hiking trails are right in front of the house. Just 15 minutes away by car is Lac de Aalfeld, which invites you to swim in the middle of the mountain panorama. Fresh spring water can be drunk directly behind the house at the "Source de la Doller". Guests can enjoy a wide range of offers: herbal walks, yoga, meditation, drumming, snowshoe hiking, massages, coaching and many more. The offer varies depending on the season, presence and availability of external providers from our own network.
