Denharten

Tann, Bavaria, Germany

Nestled in the idyllic Rottal valley, the "Tuscany of Bavaria", lies Denharten, a historic four-sided farmstead that was first documented in 1474.

The buildings, mostly dating from the mid-19th century, have been lovingly restored and now serve as a stylish guesthouse. Here, rural tradition meets modern design: wood, mid-century furniture, heirlooms, and select design classics combine to create a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Anyone who appreciates old buildings will feel right at home.

A blossoming orchard – producing its own apple juice – and a kitchen garden surround the farm, while in spring and summer, happy cows graze in the pastures. Peaceful moments can be enjoyed on the terraces or gathered during a walk through the surrounding countryside.

Theresa, who grew up in a family-run hotel, personally ensures that guests feel like they're visiting friends. She is passionate about cooking, and small dinners in the vaulted cellar and seasonal markets in spring and winter are part of her repertoire. She lives on the farm with Damian and their two dogs, lending the place a warm, familial atmosphere. The farm has received several awards for its meticulous restoration.

Those who arrive here experience a break filled with peace, beauty, and enjoyment. Whether a visit to the Mitterskirchen natural swimming pool, a trip to Burghausen, or to the local markets – the farm offers the perfect starting point to discover the Rottal region while relaxing in the charming ambiance of a historic house.

Sustainable

Architecture

The listed four-sided farmstead is a classic example of the regional architecture of the Rottal valley. The functional arrangement of the buildings around a central courtyard reflects the local architectural heritage, while the carefully restored historic architecture preserves the tradition of rural building. Constructed of brick (exposed brick construction), the farmstead combines authenticity with contemporary comfort and has been awarded a heritage preservation prize for its restoration. For all work, the owners relied on local craftspeople and suppliers. Only for the new bathrooms were specialists from Munich required.

Food

Only seasonal and regional food is served. The ingredients come from local partners, the surrounding farmers' markets, or from their own garden – where they are still actively practicing. Food waste is minimized, and the hosts maintain a give-and-take relationship with their neighbors' chickens. Classics on the menu include granola, apple juice and compote, and cheese pastries, alongside regularly featured new favorites. Currently a popular dish is a creation featuring Castell Franco cheese, blood oranges, pecorino, and buckwheat.

For larger events, Theresa and her friend Johanna – a master florist and former innkeeper – along with a carefully selected, dedicated team, take care of guests and the smooth running of the event. Most team members come from the region; they've become like a small family, working together with joy and looking out for one another. For years, the team has supported the aid organization "STELP". A highlight is the annual winter market: friends and neighbors bake, knit, and craft for a good cause, and donations are collected at a special stand, with all proceeds going directly and entirely to "STELP".

Environment

A photovoltaic system provides an average of around 80% energy self-sufficiency per year. Waste is routinely separated, and organic waste is composted. Environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry products are used, as well as natural, vegan personal care products – organic, sustainable, and free of harmful additives. The orchard and kitchen garden promote biodiversity, preserve heritage fruit and cultivated varieties, and enable conscious, eco-friendly gardening. Furthermore, the accommodation is actively involved in the local fruit and gardening association, thus contributing to the protection of regional nature and traditions.

Well-Being

A sauna is available on-site for relaxation, while a qualified massage therapist is still being sought. Active vacationers can enjoy cycling tours, leisurely walks, or hikes. The beautiful natural swimming pool in Mitterskirchen is very close by, about 20 minutes away – perfect for a refreshing break in nature.
