Clos Ceres

Viré, Burgundy, France

Clos Ceres is located in Viré, in the heart of the Mâconnais, a wine region in southern Burgundy. Vineyards stretch across the rolling hills surrounding the house, constantly changing throughout the year. Sometimes fresh green, sometimes golden yellow in autumn – the landscape here is a natural part of everyday life.

The house includes a large park with old trees, where you can find shady spots, hear birds, and simply sit and relax. The hosts' three chickens are also part of the everyday life around Clos Ceres.

The house itself is a typical 19th-century Burgundian building. After extensive renovations in 2020, it was acquired by the current owners in 2025. They had long dreamed of creating their own place where guests feel as welcome as they themselves appreciate when traveling: personal, uncomplicated, and deeply connected to the region. With only four rooms, Clos Ceres deliberately remains small and intimate.

Great care was taken in the design to preserve the character of the house. Each room is different, furnished with carefully selected antique furniture, natural materials, and calming colors. Historical details meet modern comfort.

The hosts are happy to share their personal recommendations: small wineries, charming villages, excellent restaurants, or places you might not stumble upon by chance. There's plenty to do around Clos Ceres – from wine routes and cycling tours to hiking trails, markets, castles, and the famous Cluny Abbey. Or you can simply sit in the garden, gaze out over the vineyards, and take it easy.

Sustainable

Architecture

Instead of constructing a new building, the existing vintner's house was carefully renovated, preserving its original structure and many historical details. This not only preserved the building's character but also reduced the renovation's ecological footprint. The old trees and existing green spaces surrounding the house were deliberately retained and now provide a habitat for animals as well as a tranquil, natural setting for guests.

Food

For breakfast and evening platters, ingredients from local producers are preferred, with around half of the products used being organically grown. Even though the hosts don't grow their own food, they prioritize short supply chains and prepare many components themselves. Food is used consciously, and as little as possible is wasted. Unavoidable organic waste is composted or given to the three chickens, who happily accept it.

Clos Ceres offers local artists a space to present their work within the building. Guests can discover original artworks during their stay and purchase them if interested. This supports regional creatives while simultaneously giving guests a personal insight into the local art scene. The plan is to feature different artists each year, bringing new perspectives and stories to the house.

Environment

The house is committed to waste separation, single-use plastics are avoided as much as possible, and reusable or refillable products are used wherever feasible. Certified eco-friendly cleaning products are used, all lighting is LED, and energy and water consumption are carefully monitored. Guests are also encouraged to reuse towels. While Clos Ceres itself does not run any conservation projects, the hosts aim to raise awareness among their guests about the unique landscape of Burgundy. They recommend local nature reserves, hiking and cycling routes, and birdwatching spots, as well as opportunities to experience the region's biodiversity. In this way, they hope to encourage guests to discover the surroundings consciously and with respect.

Well-Being

The house features a heated outdoor pool and a small fitness room. Additionally, the hosts collaborate with local wellness partners who offer on-site massages, shiatsu, Pilates, breathing exercises, and personalized coaching. The surrounding area is also perfect for active exploration – with bicycles available for rent, walks through the vineyards, or hikes on the region's numerous trails.
