Casa Astura is located in a quiet, small village on the Sicilian coast, just below Monte della Madonna. From there, the view sweeps across the blue sea to the Aeolian Islands, while the famous sanctuary sits enthroned on the hill—a perfect place for anyone seeking a bit of escape from everyday life.
The house itself is a loving blend of tradition and modernity. Local craftsmanship was used in the restoration of the old house: Staircases, shelves, and furniture are made from materials some of which are over 150 years old or were handcrafted. This creates an immediate sense of connection to the history of the place without sacrificing comfort.
There are no televisions here, but plenty of quiet corners and books are available. The Social Kitchen invites you to enjoy breakfast with seasonal, regional products, some homemade, some sourced from neighbors and local producers.
The Casa opened in 2023 and is run by the Vilardo family. Every guest receives a personal welcome, and small details throughout make the house feel warm and vibrant. The rooms are bright, cozy, yet airy, giving you the immediate feeling of "having arrived."
The location in the heart of a historic neighborhood makes the stay particularly charming: everyday life, culture, and tranquility are all close together. Guests can explore the area by bike, hike along scenic trails, or discover the nearby beaches and coastal paths. Recommendations for local providers of massages, yoga, and other wellness treatments are also available, as well as tips for boat trips, snorkeling, and cultural experiences in the area.

The architecture of Casa Astura combines Sicilian heritage with a clean, contemporary style. Old materials such as centuries-old wood and stone were restored and reused, while local artisans created custom-made furniture. Sustainability played a central role in all design decisions: recycled elements, energy-efficient windows, solar-heated water, a low-maintenance, nature-oriented garden, and durable, natural finishes inside and out. Regionally and locally produced materials were used wherever possible.
The property focuses on seasonal, regional, and predominantly organic produce, much of which comes from the surrounding area or the property's own garden. Almost all produce is fresh and plastic-free, and food waste is avoided or composted wherever possible. The kitchen is entirely at guests' disposal, allowing them to cook as they please using fresh, local ingredients. Those who prefer to eat out can receive recommendations for traditional Sicilian restaurants in the area.
The Casa is family-run: The hosts take care of most of the operations themselves, but work closely with local artisans and suppliers. When external help is needed, they rely on local staff, offering flexible working hours and access to the on-site facilities. The house also supports small local cultural and social projects and, where possible, makes donations to national environmental and community initiatives.
The house is completely plastic-free, drinking water comes from the spring, and coffee is prepared either with mocha or biodegradable capsules. The ingredients for breakfast and other meals come from the house's own garden or from local producers – all without disposable packaging. Waste is separated, and cleaning products are environmentally friendly. Guests can use bicycles free of charge to leave their cars at home and receive simple tips for a sustainable everyday life – from saving energy and water to properly sorting waste.
