Can Morei

Orpí, Catalonia, Spain

When the sun rises behind the mountain in the morning and you look over the valley and the forests, you can hardly believe how beautiful and quiet it is here. The winding ensemble of houses on the mountain in the middle of the countryside looks a bit like a fortress. The region is still relatively undiscovered by tourists, which is why everything here is progressing in a pleasantly sustainable and slow manner.

The Can Morei has been open since summer 2015 and is run by three families who have jointly renovated the five-hundred-year-old ensemble in a stylish, Mediterranean style. The house is integrated into a small group of houses including a Gothic church from the fifteenth century. Wine was grown in the place for centuries. In the 1920s, around 35 people lived in the village of Santa Candia. Over the years the place became more and more abandoned until it was finally rediscovered.

The charm of the old walls was retained during the extensive renovation. The beautiful old stone ceilings and wooden beams can still be admired today. There were also new, floor-to-ceiling windows through which light can stream in. Large, comfortable beds, bright colors and spacious bathrooms with natural stone ensure immediate well-being in the eight holiday apartments of different sizes, almost all of which have their own terrace.

There is also a pool for everyone with a wonderful view and a covered whirlpool with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas. In the evening, the building lights up invitingly and the friendly owners truly anticipate their guests' every wish. But many things are simply solved well. There is an entry aid for the pool and all common areas are also barrier-free.

The region offers many opportunities to reach small producers of wine, oil and other local products. In the surrounding villages and cozy bodegas, time seems to have stood still and traditional dishes are waiting to be tried.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe reconstruction mainly used stone, wood, iron and clay. The focus was on removing barriers. Lots of details for everyday life (low clothes hangers, long-handled taps, 40cm high sofas, windows with a view and much more) that make life easier for people with disabilities, but also for their companions and carers. This design was recognized by the World Tourism Organization in its report "Tourist Accessibility in Mountain Areas". Stone materials, wooden beams, clay floors are materials produced locally. All the companies that contributed to the reconstruction also come from the region and are very closely linked to Can Morei.

Can Morei is one of the projects selected by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in its "Accessibility and Inclusive Tourism Development in Natural Areas" report (May 2021).
This publication addresses the relative lack of research on accessibility in natural areas. Through numerous case studies and best practice examples from UNWTO members and other organisations, it highlights various ways in which accessibility projects in natural areas can be designed and implemented to enable people with disabilities to travel to these areas.

EnvironmentWith a 60 kW biomass central heating boiler, the apartments are heated in winter via underfloor heating and hot water is produced. Each apartment has smart technology for heating. There is also a photovoltaic system to generate electricity. Two aerothermal systems support cooling in summer and heating in winter while the sun shines. During the renovation, attention was paid to maximum insulation and LED light bulbs were installed. The rainwater storage contains 25,000 liters of water for garden irrigation. Strict recycling measures and awareness of water consumption are explained to all guests. In addition, the hosts are committed to projects in the region to protect forests and biological diversity as well as to develop rural areas. This ranges from the chairmanship of the forestry association with projects on forest fire prevention, biodiversity protection and rural development, to membership of the Anoia Tourism group, which promotes sustainable tourism and in particular accessibility in all activities.
