Anyone looking out of the window of the Campanile Nero in the morning will, depending on the direction, see snow-covered mountains, the picturesque Val Chiavenna or even a palm tree right outside the door.
The historic building, first documented in 1167, was rebuilt in its present form in the 16th century after a turbulent history. Thick stone walls, stone roofs, and rocks protruding into the rooms contribute to the extraordinary flair of this unique place.
Michaela and her husband from Vienna have lived on Lake Constance for over 15 years, love nature, and have been connected to Chiavenna for almost 30 years. Two years ago, they fulfilled their dream and made the campanile their own. Together with local specialists and in close consultation with the Milanese heritage authorities, the building was carefully renovated and restored to its original structure.
The location on the edge of the valley offers breathtaking views from the terraces and invites you to linger, whether sunbathing, practicing yoga, or enjoying a relaxed get-together. Directly from the lower terrace, you can access the stream, which is partially dammed in summer, creating wonderful swimming spots. The region combines northern Italian flair with alpine scenery: alpine climbing tours, boat trips on Lake Como, historical hiking trails along ancient Roman roads, and excursions to Milan or the Renaissance Palazzo Vertemate are all readily available.
The mild climate in the valley, the tranquility away from mass tourism and the variety of activities make the Campanile Nero a wonderful retreat for nature and culture lovers alike.

In the interest of sustainability and efficiency, many materials were reused or upcycled on site: old flooring was transformed into furniture such as the kitchen bar and mirror frames, a disassembled metal spiral staircase was repainted and reinstalled, stones from the masonry were reused, and the old wine press was rebuilt as a decorative object. Only skilled tradespeople from within a 10-kilometer radius were employed for all work, and regional wood and stone were used where existing materials were insufficient.
The waste is precisely separated according to local regulations and disposed of accordingly. The water comes from the waterworks about 100 meters above the road and is also piped to the public fountain.
In winter, all kinds of alpine sports are available – cross-country skiing, downhill and ski touring, snowshoeing, or ice climbing. In summer, hiking, climbing, and cycling are popular activities. Swimming in the pools of the stream below the house or at other nearby spots is also a refreshing option, as is swimming in Lake Como.
