There used to be so much going on here in Stegelitz that the old school building from 1786 had to be expanded by two more halls at the beginning of the 20th century to accommodate all the students.
What it looks like in the countryside in the new federal states is well known: economically structurally weak and only sparsely populated. But what some define as necessity, others make a virtue of. Such as the non-profit organization Social Impact. They support social innovations and liveliness in the Brandenburg and Uckermark region with a great deal of commitment.
In addition to the guest house built in 2005 with 8 double rooms and 2 workshop rooms, Social Impact offers space for social projects and workshops in the old school. In addition, groups can use the house for retreats, off-sites or group coaching. The extensive area in the middle of the Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve also offers the opportunity to find inspiration and space for creativity.
With the increased influx and commitment of such organizations and people, creative movement is slowly coming back into the region, which even surprises some city dwellers in terms of quality and quantity.
ArchitectureCenturies of regional architectural styles can be traced in the Alte Schule Stegelitz. The neighboring old church from 1297, for example, is typical of the time and is built of found fieldstone and is architecturally quite unique in the region. The old school building from 1786, when the village had finally recovered from the long period after the Thirty Years' War where it was uninhabited, is built with adobe half-timbering and fieldstone and has been preserved as such. The emperor at the time donated 5,000 marks to buy the 13 carriages full of bricks for the subsequent construction of the hall. And the newer guest house is built in a regional timber frame construction with clay walls and hemp insulation. Then as now, all materials are from the immediate vicinity and the current owners work exclusively with regional craftsmen when it comes to renovation and expansion. As much as possible is upcycled and reused. Wood and walls are protected and finished with ecological oils and paints. The indoor climate is therefore unique.
FoodAs much as possible fresh, seasonal and regional, because within a radius of 3,300 hectares (about 5,000 football pitches) there is nothing but organic farming. No microwave, ready-to-eat ingredients, flavor enhancers and preservatives, and as much packaging waste as possible. In the old school you can also cook in the spacious and communicative country kitchen. This is also great for cooking workshops. Vegetarian and vegan catering is available for groups on request.
Social Impact promotes social innovations for rural areas and takes care of strengthening endogenous potential in structurally weak regions. Social Impact works on and with findings, experiences and networks on social entrepreneurship in rural areas. They want to strengthen regional potential, network innovative actors and promote rural areas as attractive locations in the long term. The Alte Schule Stegelitz in the Uckermark is now a contact point for social innovations in rural areas. Not to be underestimated in this structurally weak region: they create jobs for people from the neighborhood who identify emotionally with the old school project and can help shape it themselves.
EnvironmentAs is usual in a school, there is a spirit of responsibility for current and future generations. And with it a claim to keep the living space healthy and worth living in. In this sense, sustainability is practiced here in all areas. In terms of energy, the old school is now very well positioned with a solar photovoltaic system, a solar thermal system, a very efficient wood gasification stove and an additional gas thermal bath. In addition, waste is avoided wherever possible, almost everything that can still be used is used for a new purpose and everything else is either composted or entrusted to the local waste disposal department separately. The Old School provides information about the importance of the biosphere reserve and the Buchenwald Grumsin World Heritage Site, as well as about regional sustainable tourism activities such as "pleasure hiking"
Well-BeingIn the annex there is a sauna that can be used on request. In 9 minutes by bike you can reach the beautiful bathing area of the Oberuckersee. There are cooperation partners in the Alte Schule that can be booked for advice on cooking, nutrition, innovation or yoga.
