Apartment

Werkgut - Atelierhaus

Meezen, Northern Germany, Germany

Village tranquility in the middle of the nature park, surrounded by meadows, forests and ponds - that's what awaits guests at the Werkgut in Schleswig-Holstein. The host is the designer Mikaela Dörfel, who converted her farm into a place for art, culture and crafts in 2020. In 2022 she bought and renovated the over 100-year-old old part of the farm opposite. Since May 2023 there has also been space here for guests, workshops, artists and teams.

Those who come here get a beautiful half of the house with three rooms and a fully equipped kitchen-living room. The rooms are decorated in Scandinavian style. As decoration you can find products from the hostess, but also pictures and pieces from artist and designer friends. The atmosphere is bright, cozy, stylish and familiar.

The best thing: The apartment is barrier-free accessible via a ramp, has a barrier-free bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor and the kitchen-living room and access to the terrace are also barrier-free. The studio house can also be booked as a whole with a studio and four or five bedrooms for an additional charge. There is also a seminar room/studio and another bedroom with a bathroom and another guest toilet. It is also possible to book the suite including an integrated bathroom. The house is then suitable for 8-10 people. The rooms in the Werkgut opposite can also be booked for creative workshop work.

At the Werkgut, guests have the opportunity to ride horses or take part in workshops on arts and crafts topics such as wood carving, porcelain turning or weaving. They can also explore the Aukrug Nature Park, the Stör River or the ceramics town of Kellinghusen, which are nearby.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house is an old villa from the 1910s. During the renovation, attention was paid to preserving the existing materials (floors, tiles, bathrooms, doors). In addition, the energy value of the house was reduced through renewed insulation. The natural garden with hedges, bushes, flowers and old fruit trees was retained or expanded. When setting up, all old furniture was refurbished where possible, a lot of things were bought second-hand (antiques) and only the bare essentials were purchased new. Emphasis is placed on natural materials such as wood, metal and glass. Only companies from the region were commissioned for the renovation. The building materials such as bricks were purchased used from the region.

FoodWhen workshops take place, the food is mainly cooked with seasonal and organic certified products as well as vegetarian or vegan. Leftover food is distributed among residents and employees, and waste is composted if possible.

All employees come from the immediate area (Meezen and surrounding villages). During working hours, the team takes turns cooking so that everyone can get a warm lunch. Employees have the opportunity to network regionally in their area of expertise and, for example, to receive further training at tourism association events. If possible, there is a cozy get-together at Christmas or in the summer. Host Mikaela Dörfel's design shop also supports the International Rescue Committee by donating 5% of sales.

EnvironmentWaste separation, modern insulation for optimal energy efficiency and environmentally friendly cleaning products are a given in the factory. The energy for the main building comes from a solar system and is supplemented by green electricity. Guests have the option to change towels and linens as needed. There is also a soda stream in the kitchen to avoid single-use plastic bottles. There is also a flowering meadow on the property, there is an owl box in the attic and efforts are made to protect insects and birds. Due to its location in the Aukrug Nature Park, guests have access to many information boards on environmental education on the surrounding hiking and cycling trails as well as in the neighboring communities. Information material about the Aukrug Nature Park is also available in the apartment.
