Villa al Castello

Rezzonico, Lake Como, Italy

Waking up, opening the windows and marveling at the sun reflecting off the lake – a morning in the Villa al Castello on the world-famous Lake Como in Italy looks something like this. A second look reveals the wonderful mountain peaks of the Bergamasque Alps on the other side of the lake.

You can spend the morning in the refreshing pool or enjoy the view over the Castello Rezzonico and its well-tended park. Nowhere else on the lake can you find this combination of tranquillity, views, luxurious facilities and child-friendly surroundings.

The two owners have fallen in love with Lake Como and the area. They have spent numerous holidays here and the desire to own a house in the area grew with each passing year. When they found one, they renovated it with a lot of love for the historical ambience. Their goal was to create a place where family and friends would feel welcome.

And they do. The modern industrial chic is combined in the Villa al Castello with historical interiors that have been preserved from the past. Each room has its own theme: Nobilita describes the history of Rezzonico. Montagna is all about hiking in the surrounding mountains, Desiderio is a light-filled room you've always wanted to be in, Cielo makes you feel like you're close to heaven and Luna e Stelle is on the top floor where especially the little ones have space to play and sleep close to the moon and stars.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house has been carefully renovated, preserving much of the old substance and still more than exceeding all current energy efficiency requirements. The house and roof were insulated and modern triple glazing was installed. The entire planning and construction was carried out by a local architect and craftsmen from the region. Instead of a pool heater, the pool is black and therefore has a comfortable temperature for a long time, even for the youngest. In addition, some old pieces of furniture that had remained in the house were spiced up and now shine in new splendor.

FoodThe villa is self-catering, but a private chef can be booked on request. Guests are also greeted with a basket full of goodies that are almost entirely made locally or in Italy (e.g. oil from the local olive mill, Italian risotto rice from "Lago" - all in a gift basket made by a small lakeside sewing workshop .

Only staff from the region work at the Villa da Castello. In addition, only service providers from the region are contracted. There is a chef who grows fresh vegetables in his own garden and then cooks for the guests (at an additional cost). For example, a flower workshop with a local florist has also taken place.

EnvironmentAll rooms have modern energy saving or LED lighting according to the latest energy criteria. In addition, the heating and kitchen appliances were modernized and attention was paid to high-quality and energy-saving appliances (at least class A). The heating is equipped with an energy-saving heating pump. The modern gas boiler (installed in 2019) has significantly lower CO2 emissions than heating oil or district heating. Unfortunately, there was no option to install an air heat pump, as the regional power grid on Lake Como is not sufficiently dimensioned for this. Since the villa is located in a protected area (similar to the protection of historical monuments), the installation of a solar system could not be approved. Fresh towels are usually only provided for each guest upon arrival. If laundry needs to be washed in between, there is a washing machine or a fee-based linen change service. In addition, all taps are equipped with flow limiters and the toilets are equipped with water-saving cisterns. A waste sorting system is also in place in the villa and all guests are advised on their arrival where to find the various bins (in Italy rubbish is not collected separately by household, there are decentralized collection points). House guests are also informed that unused food does not have to be thrown away, but can stay in the cupboard for the next guests.

Well-BeingIn addition to the private pool, there are other spa services such as massages and beauty treatments that can be organized upon request. There is also a concierge service that caters to all wishes and needs and organizes excursions.
