What do you do with an old defensive tower from the early 19th century that cannot be demolished due to the protection of historical monuments? Certainly not a hotel. Or is it? The two architects Kostas Zouvelos and Kassiani Theodorakakou dared to do so.
The result is accommodation that is unparalleled in southern Greece, perhaps across the country. The view was incredible, the silence almost intense. So the two of them wouldn't have hesitated to take over the old fort when it was up for sale. The renovations took five years, with the architects / owners attaching great importance to the compatibility with the environment and history of the building. The somewhat remote location and the only three rooms guarantee a quiet and exclusive vacation.
The tower, the heart of the complex, provides a unique view of the Mediterranean Sea and the western coast of the Mani Peninsula. This “middle finger” of the Peloponnese is the vestibule to the legendary Cape Tenaro, the southernmost point of Greece. According to Greek mythology, a nearby cave was even the entrance to the underworld of Hades.
This unique environment can only be explored by those who make it out of the dream hotel. Because Zouvelos and Theodorakakou went out of their way to keep the guest in the Tainaron Blue. Not only have they renovated the fort and tower, they have upgraded it so that it blends in perfectly with the surroundings and at the same time retains its almost antique charm. The facility also meets all the requirements that a modern hotel may have, as small as it is. A hydrotherapeutic infinity pool, sun terrace, own restaurant, extensive spa offer, well-equipped rooms ... did we mention the view?
ArchitectureThe fort and defense tower are listed buildings and have been restored with due care and dedication. The architects and owners Kostas Zouvelos and Kassiani Theodorakakou have rejected and revised their concept several times. Their goal was for the new hotel to blend seamlessly into the landscape within the old walls. The walls were not only renewed but even reinforced with the traditional Kourasani fabric mix, which consists of lime, sand and earth from the surrounding area. For renovation, Zouvelos and Theodorakakou used only materials from the area, pool, terraces and patio are based on the original architecture. Although they were newly built, they do not disturb the overall picture in any way. The structure of the stone walls continues in the rooms. Vaulted ceilings, embrasure-sized windows and minimalist furnishings perfect the interplay of indoor and outdoor areas.
FoodThe Tainaron Blue has its own restaurant, which guarantees privacy and is reserved for guests only. George Samoillis and his sous-chef Sakis Bellis take care of the kitchen. Guests enjoy the particularly healthy, traditional Manis cuisine. Lots of fish, the best olive oil (a specialty of the region), tomatoes, meat, salads - the menu leaves nothing to be desired. The recipes are simple, but always surprising due to the many ingredients available. Add to that the famous Greek wine that goes with each dish. Breakfast is always included in the price of the accommodation, meals are served either on the terrace, by the pool in the patio or on a veranda with a lake view.
Well-BeingThe infinity pool is hydrotherapeutic, and there are various spa and wellness offers. This also includes feel-good products from the Greek brand O.Live
A 19th-century defence tower is host to this three-room hotel on Cape Tainaron – the southernmost point of mainland Greece. Looking out over the Mediterranean Sea, the thick stone building has been carefully restored so that it appears to "emerge from the rock upon which it was founded".
The architect owners of this 200-year-old stone tower house turned it into an exquisite little hotel with only three rooms. It’s an incredibly peaceful and romantic hideaway in an area famed for its historical villages, wild landscape, great walking trails and quiet beaches.
The latest and most elegant in a series of Maniot towers to be converted into hotels, Tainaron Blue has turned a dusty stone fortification into a contemporary refuge with an infinity pool overlooking the Mediterranean.
