Spothut De Joffers is a uniquely designed holiday home that blends harmoniously into nature. The building literally blends into the surroundings. It stands on stilts and the wooden facade houses nesting places for four different bird species, so that the house also serves as a bird sanctuary.
Construction was completed in May 2023. Owner Carole rents out the house herself. Originally raised in the Arnhem region, she has lived in Amsterdam for 25 years. This beautiful house is her retreat from hectic city life. The interior of the house is luxurious, minimalist and modern. Beds, bed linen and towels are of very high quality and every element in the house is handmade by local carpenters. The house has both an indoor and outdoor kitchen. Cozy evenings with home-cooked food are guaranteed.
Buitenplaats Koningsweg, where the holiday home is located, is a cultural refuge with history. During the Second World War, the Germans were stationed here and there is still a bunker nearby that can be visited. After the war, the place served as a training ground for Dutch soldiers.
A walk through the adjacent forest leads directly to the holiday home. There are nine different houses in the area, called Follies. Their design is all about "camouflage and integration into nature".

ArchitectureThe design of the house was developed under the guiding principle of "nature inclusion". The house is built entirely of wood, only the foundation is made of concrete. Four nesting places for small birds, bees, butterflies and bats were integrated into the facade to promote local wildlife. The house also does not have any external lighting so as not to disturb the animals in the area. Only wood from the Netherlands was used for the construction to support the local economy and ensure sustainable construction.
Host Carole is a member of Natuurmonumenten/Park De Hoge Veluwe and supports it financially every year.
EnvironmentOnly environmentally friendly cleaning products are used for cleaning. In addition, the host is active in the field of food transformation in the Netherlands, where she runs an urban permaculture to promote local food.
