We are in Switzerland, in fact between Appenzeller Vorderland and Lake Constance, under the foothills of the Alpstein massif, leaving the traffic noise far behind us. If you approach the castle on crunchy gravel and in the shade of mighty trees, you will enter a different period of time at the latest when you enter the idyllic garden restaurant.
The Bio-Schlosshotel Wartegg is a nearly 500-year-old historic building, rich in history with a changeable past between refugium, aristocratic residence and residence of many prominent residents. In 1998 it was opened as one of the first four organic hotels in Switzerland and is owned by the Mijnssen family.
All rooms offer views of the park or Lake Constance. The rooms are bright and modern, reduced to the essentials and equipped with high quality Hüsler natural beds. On LED is waived throughout the house and the WiFi, every guest can turn on request. The Bio-Schlosshotel offers space for families, as well as for leisure guests and is ideal for breaks, seminars and retreats.

ArchitectureToday, the hotel and the English Garden are kept alive as a synthesis of historical cultural and natural heritage. During the renovation, only high-quality natural materials were used and in some cases even wood from the castle park was used. When designing the rooms, the bright lime plaster ensures optimal light exploitation. The parquet is oiled and the sandstone from the region. In the hotel rooms we find linen fabrics and Hüsler natural beds. Anyone wandering through the English Garden will meet the Cabanne designed by Jean Nouvels, an exhibit he created for Expo 02. Today it is alternately recorded by different artists (mostly from the region).
FoodThe castle kitchen is one of very few certified with organic bud restaurants (strictest label in Switzerland and the only certified organic Gault Millau restaurant in Switzerland). The Wartegg Castle is a member of Slow-Food and the menus focus mainly on what grows in the garden from June to October. Even the pasta is handmade. The fertile soils and insect diversity are the foundation for healthy and tasty food and seasonality is of great importance. In summer, food is prepared according to the offer in the ProSpecieRara variety garden with vegetables, herbs, berries and flowers. Do not miss the salad 14 (14 herbs from the garden) and the homemade northern Italian agnolotti. Of course there is always a vegan menu on the menu (3-course). The drinks and wine offers are selected.
The Wartegg Castle offers many part-time positions for mothers. At the moment nine mothers are employed with small children. Overtime is respected and paid, and free wishes are taken into consideration as much as possible. One of many projects is the support of the cultural association with various events. And not forgetting the maintenance of the large listed park, which is open to the public. The Appenzell mineral water (Goba), which is served in the castle, supports Viva Con Aqua Switzerland, a non-profit association that works to ensure that all people worldwide have access to clean drinking water.
EnvironmentThe idea of sustainability permeates all the work, from employee leadership to cleaning agents. There is a small hydroelectric power plant, heat recovery from the kitchen, two heating power plants and the garbage is separated as much as possible. In the kitchen care is taken to produce as little food waste as possible (eg no banquet buffets). The entire castle draws ecological electricity and the printed matter is printed with myclimate. When shopping, attention is paid to the climate label if possible. The Appenzell mineral water (Goba) supports Viva Con Aqua Switzerland, a non-profit association committed to ensuring that everyone in the world gains access to safe drinking water.
Well-BeingThe heart of the castle is the 5.5 meter bathing oval with the title "the most beautiful bathtub in Switzerland". The historic turquoise bath with Jacuzzi and sauna is free in the morning for hotel guests and can be booked in the afternoon for private sessions (for families, for example). This includes a secluded balcony and a fantastic view of the greenery of the park. Massages and yoga can be booked on request. If you prefer fresh air and bird chirping, take a walk in the wonderful garden. Farfalla products are used throughout the hotel. The certified natural cosmetics from Switzerland trumps with their natural ingredients and subtle fragrances. All towels and bed linen are 100% organic cotton - unfortunately not a matter of course in eco hotels. By the way, in the summer bathing trips to Lake Constance are recommended. It is one of the cleanest waters in Europe and can be reached in 10 minutes on foot.
