re~barn

Essel, Lower Saxony, Germany

At re~barn, guests will find a harmonious fusion of old and new as well as community and privacy. The building, a former stable from the early 1920s, has been lovingly restored and now combines traditional elements such as vaulted ceilings and cast-iron windows with modern comfort. Family-run by hosts Tanja and Ehler, re~barn opened its doors to guests for the first time in July 2021.

The re~barn is located to the side of the main farmhouse on the hosts' agricultural holding in the old town center of Essel. Each of the four lofts in the approximately 200 square meter accommodation is uniquely designed and carries the charm of its previous use. They are therefore also named "Muh" (Moo), "Oink", "Blök" and "Schrotkammer". Old stable elements have been cleverly integrated into the interior design, and the friendly colors and natural materials create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The large common room is the heart of the re~barn. It invites you to linger and relax. The high ceilings and the open space concept give the accommodation a certain loft character, while the view of the farm and the surrounding half-timbered houses underlines the rural idyll.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe old building was given a new use. Particular attention was paid to the use of sustainable materials, products and furnishings. These include ecological interior insulation, heating with renewable raw materials, water-saving toilets, silicate paints, energy-efficient LED lamps and triple-glazed windows. Some furniture was recycled or redesigned from old materials, resulting in a successful combination of old and new. The architect and the construction companies and tradesmen involved in the renovation all come from the region.

Ehler is co-initiator of the Alwine community wind turbine, which can be found on the energy cycle route in the Aller-Leine valley.

EnvironmentWaste separation is a particular focus at re~barn. The accommodation also gets its electricity 100% from renewable energy. Water-saving toilets have been installed and cleaning products, shower gels and hand soaps have been carefully selected. The toilet and kitchen paper as well as garbage bags are made from recycled materials and the hosts strive to reduce the use of plastic and use high-quality, long-lasting products. In the guest folder, which is available in the rooms, they also provide detailed information about their sustainability measures and the careful use of resources.
