Quinta Japonesa is located in a green valley in Portugal and offers a true retreat that perfectly combines nature, history, activities and tranquility.
This family business was founded in 2012 when owner Michelle moved to Portugal from the Netherlands. Nowadays she runs it together with her Dutch partner Thomas. It is one of Portugal's first glamping destinations, offering a special escape from everyday life with seven unique accommodations.
The Quinta is a place where rustic elements blend with modern comfort and a touch of the Orient. Guests can experience the Japanese "Shinrin-yoku" – a "natural bath" that refreshes the senses. Each accommodation has its own charm: Casa Cha, for example, offers views of the Japanese style garden; Casa Matsu sits on top of a hill, surrounded by pine trees and every now and then a visit of playful squirrels; Casa Ohashi has a lawn in front with a pond and a palm tree, Casa Baixo has an african tree on the terrace that when flowering smells like perfume; Casa Antiga is a cozy cottage that reflects the history of the place, while Casa Pinhal and Lucia Lima offer expansive views over the green valley with amazing sunsets.
Guests can treat themselves to a relaxing massage in the on-site Japanese garden or participate in a Qi Gong training session led by your host Michelle. The carefully landscaped grounds, based on Feng Shui principles, enhance the tranquility and harmony of the surroundings.
Just do nothing or if you want to be more active and explore the region, just ask your helpful hosts Michelle and Thomas for suggestions that fit your interests and needs.

ArchitectureThe main house, with two apartments, is a traditional stone-walled country house, modeled after the original cottage. Another house on the hill, also with two apartments, is a restored country house. The remaining three accommodations are glamping tents, blending harmoniously into the landscape and offering guests a unique nature experience. During the recent renovation, primarily secondhand furniture was used or existing pieces were repurposed.
Michelle and Thomas run the accommodation together. During peak season, they work with a local cleaning company, but they also have volunteers who help with daily tasks such as watering the garden, cleaning the common areas, shopping, and laundry. The helpers work four hours a day, stay overnight for free, and receive a hot meal. Vouchers for two-day stays are often awarded for social benefit lotteries. Vouchers are also donated to the Geopark organization, and support is also provided to Soroptimist International (NGO).
EnvironmentEnergy is supplied by solar panels, which provide both electricity and hot water. Two wells are used to irrigate the gardens, and the two ponds are fed by natural spring water. Waste separation is consistently practiced, and ecological cleaning products are used. Since 2023, Quinta Japonesa has proudly held the Biosphere Certificate, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices.
Well-BeingHost Michelle is a Qi Gong instructor. Guests can participate in a group session once a week or book a private lesson. There's also a heated pool on site, and the Japanese garden features a platform ideal for yoga or other relaxing activities, such as a massage. The hosts can provide contacts for private yoga and Pilates lessons, as well as massages.
