The Posio Guesthouse, which belongs to Polar Light Tours, is located directly on the shore of Lake Suolijärvi in the unspoilt nature of Posio, Lapland.
In the mornings, guests gaze upon the shimmering water, framed by silent, snow-covered pines in winter, or the gently shifting colors of the lake in summer. The experience becomes particularly magical in the autumn and winter months when the Northern Lights illuminate the sky above the lake, or during the Midnight Sun in June and July.
The guesthouse itself has a long history: originally built as a village school in the mid-20th century, it was lovingly renovated by the family-run company 'Polar Lights Tours Oy'. The warm, wooden character of the house was preserved, and the spirit of community that has always permeated the building remains palpable. The Posio Guesthouse is intended to be a place where people can experience the peace and simplicity of Lapland. Guests can hike, swim, fish, pick berries and mushrooms, or simply sit by the shore and listen to nature.
Polar Light Tours combine the tranquility of a traditional Lappish house with an authentic nature experience. It is a retreat for people seeking the beauty of the seasons, the rhythm of nature, and quiet moments far from the city – a place that offers time to breathe and connect with the surroundings.

The guesthouse's architecture preserves the character of the former village school in Lapland: wooden floors, large windows, and a simple, authentic atmosphere define the building. Local and recycled materials were used in the renovation and furnishing, and regional craftspeople contributed their expertise, ensuring that every detail exudes warmth and nostalgia. The furniture and furnishings are a blend of restored antique pieces and local handicrafts.
Guests can enjoy breakfast and meals made with fresh ingredients upon request, including fish from the surrounding lakes and berries from the local forests. Traditional Lappish dishes, such as creamy salmon soup, local fish dishes, reindeer or berry tarts, are given a special touch through artisanal preparation. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available upon request. Food waste is minimized by preparing only appropriate quantities and composting organic leftovers.
The team consists primarily of staff from Posio and the surrounding villages, who are trained in sustainable tourism, animal welfare, and safety. The hosts also work closely with local artisans, fishermen, and reindeer herders to promote income generation and cooperation within the community. Students have the opportunity to complete internships in tourism and nature guiding at the accommodation, allowing young people to gain practical experience while simultaneously strengthening the local culture.
The guesthouse is heated with geothermal energy and partially powered by solar energy. Energy-efficient heating and lighting, waste separation, and recycling further contribute to resource-conserving operations. Polar Lights Tours is also actively involved in the Sustainable Travel Finland and Good Travel Seal programs, which support the continuous development of sustainable practices. During their stay, guests receive information about responsible travel, local protected areas, and respecting nature according to the principle of "jokaisenoikeus"—the right of access to nature in Finland.
A traditional, wood-fired Finnish sauna by the lake invites you to a warming bath or a refreshing dip in the water – in winter, even an ice bath. Yoga, forest bathing, and relaxation sessions are available upon request. Active travelers will also find plenty of options in the surrounding area: hiking in Riisitunturi National Park or Korouoma Canyon, canoeing, fishing, berry and mushroom picking, snowshoeing, skiing, fat biking, reindeer safaris, or visits to local ceramic artists such as Pentik and Miki Studio.
