Pension LANGE ORT

Hiddensee, Baltic Sea, Germany

In LANGE ORT on Hiddensee, guests enjoy a fantastic view over the Bodden and the picturesque marina. The pension is the perfect place to slow down. The months before and after the season are particularly suitable for this. In the summer holidays, like everywhere else on the Baltic Sea coast, and depending on how busy the port is, things get a little more colourful. The secluded location, despite the proximity to the main town of Vitte, and the spaciousness of the site always allow for a relaxed and family atmosphere. LANGE ORT offers an unforgettable holiday in a unique atmosphere, surrounded by nature and in the immediate vicinity of the beach (250 meters away).

The privately run sailing harbor right next to the accommodation has (felt) always existed. At the turn of the millennium, new land was created, the owners expanded the jetty, new sanitary facilities and a pension building were built, which was operated until 2013. At the turn of the year 2021, new tenants took over the pension. In the first step, the rooms were redesigned and modernized. The bright and cozy rooms are basically identical, differing only in the color scheme and in the furniture and accessories restored in-house. Upon arrival, there are fresh meadow flowers in the rooms. There are deliberately no televisions in the rooms.

The hosts were themselves holiday guests on Hiddensee for many years. The island has become a place of longing and refuge for them. They now want to share this place with their guests. Holidaymakers will not find an overcrowded hotel here, but rather employees who are committed to fair working conditions and who want to make every stay something very special: A time together, on a small scale and bit by bit. LANGE ORT lay dormant for a long time — after the revitalization and renovation, there are now many plans, such as the development of a cultural program with readings, concerts and much more.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house was purpose-built in 2000. The facade is kept in white and blue and radiates summer freshness. The renovation concept is based on up- and recycling. As part of the renovation work, only small, local craft businesses are commissioned.

FoodBreakfast, cakes and snacks (soups, salads, sandwiches) and drinks are served for house and harbor guests. All dishes are prepared or baked in-house. The products come from selected suppliers - some in organic quality, some regional and seasonal. The cheese is sourced from Holland, sausage from a delicatessen. The hosts offer what they find good themselves: mainly vegetarian dishes and small portions. In addition, it is communicated that the guests should rather order more than that food is thrown away; even if this is more complex for the service. As a result, food waste can be avoided almost entirely.

The small team of the pension lives together on the premises. Seasonal workers, who are often underpaid or overworked, are deliberately not hired. The team works in a family atmosphere, there are flat hierarchies, and we regularly cook and eat together. The hosts are committed to the employees and work together with them on their professional development through additional qualifications.

EnvironmentThe hosts lease the house, which was built in 2000. For this reason, although they can contribute many ideas, they often reach their limits when it comes to energetic improvements. The renovation of the rooms they carried out largely independently. Existing furniture was refurbished and supplemented with old pieces. Old wood from the jetties was used for shelves, counters and the wood paneling. The property shows art by artist friends. In order to save resources and cleaning supplies, the rooms are only cleaned every two days. In the rooms, guests will find the natural cosmetics “STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME!”. The hosts would also like to sensitize the guests to mindful water consumption. In addition, rubbish is separated, organic waste is composted and a separate herb bed is used. The household laundry is washed and mangled in order to avoid long transport routes to the mainland. The hosts support the citizens' initiative "Hafen Vitte", which is directed against the existing plans of the administration and advocates a careful and environmentally friendly renovation of the city port of Vitte. They make their premises available to the citizens' initiative for meetings and assemblies free of charge.
