Nissos Sofiaia

Astakos, Ionian Islands, Greece

If you really want to be on a lonely island in Greece, this is the place for you. For that real Robinson Crusoe feeling, Socrates – that’s his real name – converted an old wooden boat into holiday accommodation with his family.

In the middle of the nature reserve lies the island that Socrates has known since childhood. His grandfather was already looking for a quiet life in nature and spent his holidays here on the island with his family. In 2019 an old fishing boat (kaiki) was converted into "Nissos Sofiaia". And since 2020 you can rent this real hermit dream. Completely pure and minimalist in almost untouched nature. The island can only be reached by private shuttle boat and is not a tourist destination.

Inside, the accommodation is simply furnished with lots of wood and linen in a boho style and can accommodate two people. The bathroom has a rainwater shower, nice cosmetic products and a dry toilet. An outdoor shower is also attached to the boat. There is no electricity on the island. With a gas cooker or at the fireplace, you can turn the freshly delivered food into a delicious open-air dinner under the starry sky.

For the hot hours of the day there is an awning under the boat jacked up on the stones, which provides shade. In addition, a natural terrace was created on the stones with a wonderful view of the sea. For some people, this form of solitude is a very big dream that like-minded hosts want to fulfill and that you can enjoy undisturbed here with all due respect for nature.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe natural materials wood, glass and stone were used. Only the already existing boat was expanded and fixed with Greek wood. There was no interference with nature. Even a small natural pool between the stones was created naturally.

FoodThe hosts offer seasonal and local slow food - fruit, eggs, dairy and vegetable products from local producers. The boxes that are delivered daily contain the right amount of food to avoid food waste.

EnvironmentDue to the special requirements in the region, everything is sustainable here. Only solar energy is used. There is no plastic, only biodegradable and recyclable items. Rainwater is used for washing and mineral water for drinking. Rubbish is separated and plastic rubbish is collected on the beach - guests are invited to do the same so rubbish can be shipped to the mainland for recycling. The property follows the NATURA 2000 Act and the Ramsar Convention for the Conservation Area. Detailed information is available on the website.
