LERMOOSER

Lermoos, Tyrol, Austria

Live in an old train station - that's possible in Lermoos, Tyrol. The old Lermoos train station, which was built in 1910 as part of the construction of the Mittenwald Railway, was an important part of history as one of the first electrified train routes in Europe. After years of being vacant, Cleo Weber and Johann Ehmann purchased the house from ÖBB and renovated it over a period of four years. The opening finally took place in May 2023.

The two originally planned to save the house from decay, but the concept continued to evolve through collaboration with the architect and many long evenings of brainstorming. An ecological approach to ski tourism was important to them, and where better to implement it than here: a train station within walking distance of the ski area and surrounded by numerous hiking and mountain bike routes.

The clear design of the eight rooms with a total of 26 beds gives the rooms a unique atmosphere of comfort and peace, while the old elements such as floors and windows retain the charm of bygone times. The spacious communal kitchen, combined with the former waiting room as a lounge area, allows guests to have many wonderful moments of cooking for themselves and yet in company.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe station, which is a listed building, presented a major challenge for the hosts as they had to preserve the historic ambience while meeting the needs of a hotel. Examples of this include adding dormers to the beautiful roof structure to bring more light into the rooms, as well as insulating with sustainable materials. In addition, the windows were recreated true to the original and fitted with insulating glass. During the renovation, the hosts received support from local craftsmen, and the materials were largely sourced from Tyrol.

FoodWhere possible, breakfast consists of regional and organic food, the same applies to the kiosk: In addition to coffee, drinks and knick-knacks, there is also food prepared in disposable glasses that house guests and passers-by can take with them to warm up ( Bolognese vegan or with meat, soups, etc.)

EnvironmentThe hosts try to avoid packaging. Strict waste separation is already a requirement in Austria; the house is heated by the regional, innovative Lermoos district heating power plant (wood chips, pellets).
