Finca Colmina Mallorca

Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

The beautiful view of the surrounding hilly landscape with olive and almond trees is one of the highlights of the Finca Colmina Mallorca finca. The tree-shaded terrace and the spacious pool do the rest for the well-being on site.

The property, which consists of three houses, makes it unique that the guests here, completely isolated from the tourist attractions, can experience and feel the real character of the island: the starry sky, the rural atmosphere with its unique charm, practically no traffic, but the twittering of birds , the chirping of the crickets and the bleating of the sheep.

The host family consists of the extended Bach family, the Bach couple, their six children and now six grandchildren. The whole family supported the renovation and actively helped. Host Wolfgang wanted to create a place for his family where they can go on vacation and, above all, spend time together. By chance he discovered the property, which was built around 1900, in 2006, fell in love and finally bought it. The finca was gradually converted and expanded. It has been available for rent in its current structure since 2017.

The interior is modern and rather puristic. The combination of old and new reveal a clear line, even if the rooms are designed differently. Both kitchens are completely white and an outdoor kitchen allows cozy evenings outside. Two modern chimneys ensure a pleasant ambience even in the colder months of the year.

Sustainable

ArchitectureDuring the renovation, an attempt was always made to preserve the character of the house and the land, just as the previous owner, a Mallorcan farmer, had built it. In addition, particular emphasis was placed on sustainability. First of all, the old, large storage facility, which was not far from the finca, was transformed into a new small house, the casa. Only building materials that are used in the interior of Mallorca were used. The base plate and parts of the wall were preserved. Since the property is in the middle of the island, the nearest neighbor 500 meters away and the next town (Villafranca) 2.5 kilometers away, the host family was self-sufficient in all areas from the start. Four years later, the former donkey stable was converted into a small apartment, the foundation and foundation walls were preserved and a new roof was put on. This is how the casita was created with a small bathroom and a wood pellet stove. The renovation of the old finca began in 2015. Here, too, the aim was to preserve as much of the old stock as possible and still convert it so that the house is heated in an energy-optimized way in winter in cold, wet weather and without air conditioning in summer when temperatures are very hot. The underfloor heating was installed throughout the house (ground floor and first floor) and can be regulated locally in each individual room. It is operated exclusively by solar thermal energy. The facade is clad with a thermal insulation composite system and painted to match the rural surroundings with its plants and trees. The old roof structure was refurbished and converted into a carport and used as a substructure for the outdoor kitchen. Roof tiles that were still in good quality were used again and were supplemented with new ones obtained from a Mallorcan roofer. A carpenter from Villafranca designed small side tables for the bedrooms from the large, old wooden entrance door. All handicraft work was done by local businesses from Villafranca, Porreres and other small towns in the vicinity. The atmosphere in the three accommodations is different: the finca is open and flooded with light and has spacious rooms with high ceilings, the casa is also bright and open; the casita is rather small and cozy and is heated by a pellet stove. In the outdoor area, the hosts have built benches from existing wood, put up straw umbrellas from Mallorcan production, and built an outdoor kitchen with existing wood and old stones.

FoodThe accommodation is designed for self-catering, with two indoor and one outdoor kitchens available to guests. Guests can help themselves to the fruits from the garden: oranges, oranges, mandarins, lemons, pomegranates, figs, olives, almonds and rosemary. Host Wolfgang recommends freshly squeezed orange juice from the oranges in the garden. For the purchase of groceries, the shops in the small villages in the area and the weekly markets are recommended. In the villages of Villafranca, Petra or Porreres there are small, cozy restaurants with Mallorcan dishes and local wines.

Only employees from the region work in Finca Colmina Mallorca, alongside Wolfgang, who takes care of the bookings and marketing. A gardener and an administrator work on the finca and have a small team around them that takes care of cleaning and laundry, and there is a company that takes care of maintenance. The host family maintains a close relationship with their employees and pays fair wages. If the accommodation is not rented out, employees are allowed to hold barbecues inside and use the pool. They can also help themselves to the fruit. The host couple also financially supports a project in Bolivia that takes care of the street children there.

EnvironmentGuests receive a small document that explains in a friendly and funny way how to behave in a rural setting. It is also pointed out that the accommodation with the three houses is completely self-sufficient, i.e. without public electricity, water supply and sewerage. Topics that are included are therefore saving water and electricity, correct waste disposal and consideration for nature. There is no garbage disposal in the finca, which means that the guests have to dispose of their garbage themselves: either in one of the numerous garbage containers in the area or via the recycling center in Porreres. So that you don't always have to drive to the next village, there are three mountain bikes available to guests. The entire disposal (toilets, process water) takes place via two bio-systems, which through their chamber systems ensure the decay of the waste materials without anything having to be emptied or discharged into nature. A separate well provides the water supply; for this a deep well pump was installed and new lines laid. A large photovoltaic system on its own fields supplies the accommodation with electricity. The hot water for the bathrooms and the underfloor heating is produced by solar thermal energy. Since Mallorca has an infinite number of hours of sunshine, the accommodation is almost 95% self-catering in the area of photovoltaics and solar thermal energy.

Well-BeingThe area is ideal for cycling, and three mountain bikes are available on site free of charge. There is also a cooperation with a bike rental company in Villafranca that offers e-bikes. There is a wonderful hiking trail running right by the finca and the area is ideal for jogging. The 12x6 meter pool is perfect for swimming laps before breakfast.
