Landhotel Martinsmühle

Lindau, Lake Constance, Germany

How old the mill is cannot be seen directly from the carefully restored buildings. But parts of the foundation walls date from the 17th century.

In the 1990s, Ingrid Kirnbauer, born Martin, took over the former guest house from her parents together with her husband Ulrich and expanded it into a hotel with a wide range of rooms. The idyllic secluded location surrounded by meadows and orchards with a view of Lake Constance make the place a special one. And the comfortably laid out, spacious garden with playground and petting animals does its part. For bad weather days there is a sauna, a lounge with a fireplace and the library with a large selection and lounge-like leather armchairs.

The fact that it is so cozy in Martinsmühle could be due to the fact that the hotel has been passed on from mother to daughter for several generations. The female guiding hand can be felt here in all corners and ends and makes it really cozy for the guests. And the four daughters of the Kirnbauers are already ready to continue the tradition.

You can find the hosts' favourite recipe to try in the kitchen whispers.

Sustainable

ArchitecturePreservation and continued use of an ecologically harmless building fabric is often the best sustainability strategy. So the Kirnbauers took over their parents' guest house and carefully renovated and renewed it. The floors have been upgraded with oiled parquet. In the Stadl, the former barn, there is now less hay and instead the guest apartments for two people with a kitchenette and balcony. It is connected to the main house by an architecturally excellent intermediate building made of traditional building materials and local woods. Even existing furnishings were still used and, if necessary, supplemented with new pieces. All rooms are therefore individually furnished. Some with antique painted country furniture, some in a more modern country house style.

FoodIt's cozy in the Vesperstube for house guests. The house specialty is jacket potatoes with homemade herb quark. Herbs come from our own garden, potatoes from the region and the quark is made from silage-free hay milk. The buttermilk waffles are recommended for dessert. All food is obtained from the local area and some are certified organic. And what is left of the food goes to the mill's goats and poultry. Then the chickens lay delicious eggs again. Vegetarian guests will also find something on the menu.

EnvironmentIf enough water rushes down the Mühlbach, then there is no more grinding here, but electricity is produced. Otherwise there is a photovoltaic system and a thermal solar system for electricity and hot water. Own well water is used for the garden and the distillery. And in the hotel garbage is avoided as far as possible, and the garbage that arises nevertheless is strictly separated. Nothing is fertilized or sprayed in the permaculture garden and orchard and is therefore all the more delicious. The Kirnbaurs are involved in the conservation programs "Preservation and care of orchards" and "Preservation and care of meadow meadows" and are privately involved in the "Slow Food" movement.

Location + Directions

By car

From Munich you need a good 2 hours (184 km) to drive to Martinsmühle. It's just under 2 hours from Zurich (144 km), from Stuttgart a little more than 2 hours (210 km) and from Innsbruck it's a good 2.5 hours (209 km). The exact address can be found on the hotel website.

With public transport

The Martinsmühle can only be reached by public transport according to the slow living principle. First you have to take the train to the island of Lindau. From there a city bus runs every half an hour in the right direction to the nearest larger village. And from there it's another 1.5 km on foot to the hotel. Actually quite relaxed.
