Landet Stay

Västerljung, Södermanland County, Sweden

Located in a 400-hectare nature reserve south of Stockholm, Landet Stay's cabins offer peace and comfort.

Here, elk, deer, foxes and hares live in the middle of a dense forest that changes colors throughout the seasons. In winter, a magical blanket of snow covers the landscape. In summer, you can swim in a private bay or explore the islands belonging to the property by kayak or paddle board.

The history of the historic property on which the cabins are located goes back to the year 1700. In addition to the extensive forests and fields, it includes a kilometer-long private coastline and several private islands that can be reached by boat. The untouched surroundings embody the essence of Swedish forest and archipelago life and offer an ideal refuge for anyone seeking peace and nature.

You can experience this in style in the 40 square meter, lovingly designed cabins. The modest luxury of the cabins combines Scandinavian chic with a touch of eclecticism. High-quality details such as the custom-made carpets and designer furniture create an inviting atmosphere.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe cabins are made of high-quality wood, with recyclable steel as a stable foundation. The facades are painted with Tjära, a natural material that is obtained directly from trees. The Vikings used Tjära to paint their boats and make them waterproof. This centuries-old tradition is reflected today in the construction of the cabins and combines modern sustainability with the history of the region.

FoodCollaborations with the region's best restaurants guarantee Landet Stay a culinary experience based primarily on organic, local and seasonal ingredients. All food is freshly prepared on request and delivered directly to the cabins, reducing food waste to a minimum. Depending on the season, a menu could, for example, start with a classic Toast Skagen, a typical Swedish starter with crab and roe. For the main course, an oven-baked local fish is a good option, followed by a delicious chocolate ganache for dessert. Dietary wishes are always taken into account, and there is even the option of having a private chef come directly to the cabins to prepare a tailor-made meal on site.

The employees all come from the region and are not only part of the team, but also part of the family. They have the opportunity to use the cabins at special rates and to stay there whenever there is free capacity. In addition, artists, singers and authors are offered the opportunity to live in the cabins as part of residency programs. These artists, who often come from urban areas and have little access to nature, find a place of retreat here to draw new inspiration in the silence of the forest.

EnvironmentThe philosophy of Landet Stay is based on the principle of "leaving no trace". Everything that has been built can be dismantled without leaving any residue, so that nature is returned to its original state. This approach is also conveyed to guests, with the aim of encouraging them to treat nature with the same care. Whether it is dealing with rubbish correctly or choosing the location for a barbecue fire - every contribution helps to keep the environment as pristine as possible.

Well-BeingIn collaboration with local therapists, Landet Stay offers individually tailored yoga classes, meditation courses and a variety of massages that can be tailored to guests' wishes. In addition, boat tours on the surrounding waters can be organized, with guests being picked up directly from the cabins. Guided hikes through the forests and special experiences such as Nordic Lights or cooking classes over an open fire are also available.

Testimonials

Once you arrive at Landet Stay, after an hour's drive from downtown Stockholm, it’s in the blurred contours that you really lose your sense of direction. The snow-covered forest, the timid sunshine and the sound of flowing water somewhere nearby seem to rob the horizon of its sharpness, creating a visceral connection with nature that’s both real and concrete. Outlining a new sense of coexistence with the surrounding landscape, the retreat poised between fir trees and cabins designed by Andreas Martin-Löf is the country residence everyone dreams of.

Landet offers a convenient escape from urban life, allowing visitors to bask in the natural beauty and peaceful ambiance of the Swedish archipelago, an experience typically reserved for local residents. The name “Landet” is aptly chosen, as it translates to ‘countryside’ in Swedish. This innovative hotel concept provides a sustainable, environmentally-conscious, and aesthetically pleasing haven for relaxation in the rural outskirts of Trosa, which is less than an hour away from Stockholm.

Patrick Abbattista, designwanted.com, October 2024

Beyond the cabin aesthetic and its transfixing views, Landet offers an elevated hospitality experience for guests, starting with a sauna and communal outdoor fireplace for tranquil evenings under starry skies. Personal food boxes packed with fresh local ingredients are available for delivery upon request, as well as yoga classes, meditation sessions and massages.
