High up on the edge of the cliff stands a round tower made of field stones between shady pine trees. Here the air is fresh and the view flies freely through the blue of sky and sea. The house is very secluded on a hill and can only be reached on foot.
50 years ago, Hertwig von Schöfer started building a tower with men from the village using stones that he had broken out of the mountainside. A very individual and private holiday home was created in a Mediterranean garden, which ends with a steep 200 meter drop to the sea. This expansive garden is today a "cultivated wilderness" from which a palpable force of the elements emanates: over the water, swept through by wind and storm, parched by the sun, a lonely patch of powerful earth.
People who are not afraid of the path with numerous steps reach a place that is difficult to describe, because beauty and poetry are like the wind, which cannot be grasped and yet touches people.
Today the widow and daughter of the builder live in this house and they "share" the house with people who appreciate and want something special. They offer two rooms that can be booked individually or together as a holiday apartment. The kitchen is shared with the hosts, possibly also with other guests (in the second room) - this is due to the originality of this architecture.
The hosts, who live in a self-contained living area, take care of everything that is needed. The relationship with the guests is maintained from a distance and openness, respect and helpfulness in all possible matters. All around, the island of Ischia offers famous thermal baths, volcanoes, beaches with crystal clear water and of course many small restaurants and bars with Mediterranean delicacies.
ArchitectureThe original stone tower was built from locally quarried field stones. The walls are whitewashed with lime and care was taken to use as natural and regional materials as possible during construction. All work has been carried out by local craftsmen. Some of the furniture is self-made or reused. The garden has also only been cleared and cleared a little and is simply overgrown with the native Mediterranean flora.
EnvironmentWe ask our guests to separate and reduce waste, the waste must be brought back to the village "empty", there are individual waste days such as Saturday we carry the empty wine and beer bottles to the village, Tuesday we take all the plastic waste to the village, on Wednesday the pizza boxes and other paper waste.
