High up on the edge of the cliff stands a round tower made of field stones between shady pine trees. Here the air is fresh and the view flies freely through the blue sky and sea. The house is very remote on a hill and can only be reached on foot.
50 years ago Hertwig von Schöfer started to build a tower with men from the village using stones that he had broken from the mountain side. The result was a very individual and private holiday home in a Mediterranean garden, which ends with a steep 200-meter drop to the sea. This spacious garden is now a “well-kept wilderness”, from which a noticeable force of the elements emanates: above the water, swept by wind and storm, dried up by the sun, a lonely patch of powerful earth.
People who do not shy away from the path with numerous steps come to a place that is difficult to describe, because beauty and poetry are like the wind that cannot be grasped and yet affects people.
This house is now inhabited by the builder's widow and daughter and they “share” the house with people who appreciate and want something special. They offer two rooms that can be booked individually or together as a holiday apartment. The kitchen is shared with the hosts, and possibly also with other guests (in the second room) - this is due to the nature of this architecture.
The hosts, who live in a granny living area, take care of everything necessary. The relationship with the guests is cultivated out of distance and openness, respect and helpfulness in all possible matters.
When booking more than 12 days for the whole apartment, it can be agreed that the hosts are only present for handover and departure, for shorter bookings and single room bookings, the hosts are present.
All around the island of Ischia offers famous spas, volcanoes, beaches with crystal clear water and of course many small restaurants and bars with Mediterranean delicacies.
ArchitectureThe original stone tower was made of field stones broken on site. The walls are whitewashed with lime, and the construction took care to use natural and regional materials. All work has been done by local artisans. The furniture is partly self-made or reused. The garden has also been cleared and cleared a little and is simply overgrown with the native Mediterranean flora.
EnvironmentThe owners of the Saracen Tower attach great importance to sustainable soaps and even make their own laundry detergent. The garbage is carefully separated and disposed of in a good German way. It is planned to generate own electricity from solar energy in the future, but this has not yet been implemented
