La Scuola Guesthouse

Lusiana Conco, Veneto, Italy

Between Lake Garda and Venice, this charming bed and breakfast is located in the hilly Veneto countryside near the idyllic Asiago Plateau. “La Scuola” is an old school from the 1920s that Valeria and Marco completely renovated in 2012. They have been welcoming guests here for over ten years and have fulfilled their dream of having their own guest house.

The unique atmosphere awakens memories of school days for many guests - almost like a journey through time. The decor is magical with authentic school furniture, blackboards, bird and plant identification cards, historic sports equipment and school books. And the black and white photos of former school classes give wings to the imagination of what it must have been like to go to school here.

The five rooms were appropriately named after school subjects and are very tastefully and also somewhat nostalgically and comfortably furnished. In addition to preserving the old structures, such as tiled floors, windows and wooden beams, modern comfort was always important - especially in the bathrooms. All rooms also have the same view of the garden and former schoolyard, the beautiful little bell tower and the lush green hills. On a clear day you can even see the lagoon and Venice on the horizon.

In the morning there is a wonderful breakfast in one of the two former classrooms. The church tower could almost be mistaken for the school bell. It is as if time has stood still and at the same time the accommodation is future-oriented in terms of sustainability. So you can still learn a lot of things here and above all spend a very special holiday.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe building was built as a school and is less rustic compared to the more rural houses in the area. During the renovation, everything should be restored as authentically as possible. The original beautiful windows have been retained but fitted with double glazing to save energy.

FoodThere is no restaurant but a delicious breakfast and picnic baskets on request filled with traditional Italian specialties and some exclusive recipes inspired by the past. Valeria and Marco work with local farms and producers who operate sustainably.

They worked with locals on the renovation and brought some life back to the village. After the opening, a couple of new nice restaurants have opened which are invigorating for the whole village and which Valeria and Marco enjoy working with.

EnvironmentThe idea of renovating an old school building instead of leaving it empty is a sustainable measure in itself. They bought many original pieces from old schools at flea markets and refurbished them. The solar panels provide hot water, no plastic is used, waste is separated and only ecological cleaning products are used. The non-iron bed linen also saves the mangle and the iron. The care products in the bathrooms are vegan wild herb soaps from the region. The lighting is provided by LED bulbs.

Testimonials

Perhaps the last thing you want to do on holiday is “go back to school”, but I can assure you, this little schoolhouse nestled in the picturesque province of Vicenza, a 90 minute drive from Venice, is nothing like the school days you remember. No grumpy Maths teachers, no caféteria slop for lunch and certainly no homework is involved in a stay at La Scuola Lusiana Guesthouse…
