Karl Wohnwagon

Traismauer, Lower Austria, Austria

If you imagine living in a wagon in a colorful circus-decorated dwelling or a shepherd's wagon, in which you can't stand it without thick sweaters knitted from your own coarsely spun wool, you're not quite up to date anymore.

Because since 2013, an ecologically and biologically highly modern form of small self-sufficient houses - the so-called caravans - have been built near Vienna in Austria and delivered to the world. So far there are more than 150, for example on Lake Tegernsee or in Tyrol, which enable their owners to live and live almost or completely self-sufficiently.

If you would like to try out how the dream of self-sufficient life, independent of all connections to the usual supply networks, and completely self-determined in dealing with your own resources, can become reality, you can rent “Karl” for a few days. The mobile home is in Traismauer, in the middle of the vineyards, behind a vintner's house. But there is a nice grocery store within a 10-minute walk, as well as delicious inns such as the "Landgasthaus Huber" or "da Josef". You can also have a good dinner there.

By the way, we also featured this accommodation on our blog at Five Places for Glamping . We present the concept of caravans here .

Sustainable

ArchitectureWhen you walk in, you smell and feel it immediately: Here, nature is being built: Solid wood walls, a natural larch wood facade and clay plaster are used for the construction. The caravan is insulated with sheep's wool.

FoodThe test caravans are always located near a hotel or inn that offers different dishes with a regional, seasonal and organic focus.

Wohnwagon GmbH attaches great importance to working together on an equal footing and has been recognized as a "family-friendly company". For workshops that are offered on different topics, there is always the option of paying a reduced social price instead of paying the full course fee. A special focus is on the training of young women in technical professions.

EnvironmentA caravan is an environmental statement. Because living independently means living sustainably. The generation of electricity works 100% from sun and wind. You can always keep an eye on your own energy gain and consumption via the modern display and thus become aware of your personal consumption. In the organic toilet, excretions are processed into the best compost - and 14,000 liters of drinking water are saved at the same time. Heating and hot water also work with the sun and with wood.
