Johannes Neun is an extraordinary holiday accommodation in a former church from 1964 in the Sauerland region, which was used as a place of worship until 2018.
Today, the building combines its historical significance with a modern, artistic concept. The large church interior is characterized by 28 colored stained-glass windows, whose interplay of light changes throughout the day on the walls and floors, creating a unique, almost sacred atmosphere.
Guests sleep in two individually designed sleeping alcoves and two bedrooms integrated into a freestanding cube within the church. Depending on their position, guests enjoy different views of the building's impressive interior. The exceptional tranquility of the space fosters a profound sense of slowing down and retreat.
A gallery with a large lounge sofa and library offers additional space to linger and provides a view of the entire church interior. Warm materials such as wood and linen, as well as carefully selected pieces of furniture from restored handcrafted stock, complement the modern design.
Hosts Sandra Glados and Reimund Köster have transformed the church into a personal passion project, incorporating their travel experiences and design ideas. The location is ideal, nestled between nature and urban infrastructure: forests, the town, and Lake Hennesee are all within walking distance, offering numerous recreational opportunities such as hiking, swimming, and regional events.

The building is a listed historical monument with an unconventional design and a striking tower. During the renovation, ecological building materials were used, complemented by sustainable furnishings and the refurbishment of existing furniture to conserve resources. The outdoor area was intentionally designed to be natural and insect-friendly: with piles of deadwood, a beech hedge, a partially unmown lawn, and perennial beds, a diverse habitat for bees and other insects was created. The entire garden is buzzing with life. All work involved close collaboration with local craftspeople, taking both ecological and economic aspects into account, such as minimizing waste and reusing surplus materials for other purposes.
The accommodation is sustainably heated and supplied with energy by an air-source heat pump and a photovoltaic system, supplemented by a wood-burning stove. Bed linen and towels meet the Oeko-Tex Standard, and cleaning is done exclusively with environmentally friendly cleaning products. Waste is consistently separated and recycled. Since guests are personally welcomed, these measures and the sustainable concept are explained and communicated transparently on-site.
Guests can request yoga equipment from hejhej (included in the rental price), and a personal yoga session can also be booked directly in the loft.
